Pearl Medallion

{2}

Artifact

LegalRank #475

White spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Why is this card good?

Pearl Medallion is solid, unobtrusive ramp for mono-white and white-heavy decks. Unlike a Sol Ring, it doesn't add mana — it discounts every white spell you cast, which compounds hard in decks that fire off multiple spells per turn. The deeper your white pip count, the better it scales. Where it shines: Mono-white commanders that struggle with ramp (think Heliod, Avacyn, Elas il-Kanren) appreciate any acceleration they can get, since white is the format's weakest ramp color. It's especially good in spellslinger-ish or token-flood white decks that cast lots of cheap spells, and in stax shells where you're churning out hatebears. When to skip it: In multicolor decks, the discount only hits your white spells, so it's far weaker than a generic mana rock like Arcane Signet or a Talisman that fixes colors. It also does nothing for activated abilities or your opponents' turns, and a single discount won't break through expensive curves. Mono-white: yes. Otherwise, usually pass.

    The ability doesn't change the mana cost or mana value of any spell. It changes only the total cost you pay.

  • 2023-07-28

    The ability can't reduce the amount of colored mana you pay for a spell. It reduces only the generic mana component of that cost.

  • 2023-07-28

    If there are additional costs to cast a spell, or if the cost to cast a spell is increased by an effect (such as the one created by Thalia, Guardian of Thraben's ability), apply those increases before applying cost reductions.

  • 2023-07-28

    The cost reduction can apply to alternative costs such as flashback costs.

    If a spell you cast has {X} in its mana cost, you choose the value of X before calculating the spell's total cost.
