Mox Opal

Legendary Artifact

Legal Salt 1.18RampRank #238

Metalcraft — {T}: Add one mana of any color. Activate only if you control three or more artifacts.

KeywordsMetalcraft

Why is this card good?

Mox Opal is a free mana rock with a real cost: it does nothing until you control three or more artifacts. That metalcraft requirement is the whole story — in the right deck it's a turn-zero ramp accelerator, and in the wrong one it's a dead Mox sitting in play producing nothing. This is an artifact-deck staple. Think Urza, Lord High Artificer, Breya, Osgir, Emry, Jhoira, or any cEDH list leaning on cheap mana rocks and artifact synergies. Because it taps for any color, it also fixes mana — a big deal in artifact-heavy multicolor builds where colored sources are scarce. It enables explosive starts and combos off Urza-style "free artifact" payoffs. Don't run it outside dedicated artifact decks. If you can't reliably hit three artifacts early, a basic Signet or Arcane Signet is strictly better because it actually produces mana. It's also genuinely expensive in dollars, so only buy in if your deck is built to support the metalcraft condition consistently.

If you control Mox Opal and one other artifact, then have a second Mox Opal enter the battlefield as your third artifact, you can't activate either one's mana ability before putting one into your graveyard due to the “legend rule.”
