Why is this card good?
Vault of Whispers is a black-producing artifact land, and that "artifact" typing is the entire reason to run it over a basic Swamp. It enters untapped and taps for , so the downside is minimal — it only matters when someone fires off artifact destruction like Vandalblast or Bane of Progress, where this can be collateral damage.
You play it specifically in artifact-matters and affinity-style decks. It pumps Tezzeret effects, feeds Disciple of the Vault and Marionette Master triggers, counts toward metalcraft, powers up Urza-style artifact ramp, and provides extra fodder for sacrifice synergies like Krark-Clan Ironworks or Daretti. In black artifact aristocrats, it's a free body for sacrifice outlets that also taps for mana.
Don't bother in a normal black deck — the artifact tag is a pure liability there, making your mana base vulnerable to sweepers for zero upside. Only include it when you're actively counting artifacts or sacrificing them.
