Why is this card good?
Ancient Den is a Plains that happens to be an artifact, and that subtype is the whole reason to run it. On its own it's strictly worse than a basic — it dies to artifact removal, Vandalblast, and the occasional non-targeted board wipe — so you only want it when the artifact synergy pays you back.
Where it shines:
- Artifact-matters decks: payoffs like Urza, Lord of the Forge, Affinity-style cost reducers, metalcraft, or anything counting artifacts on the battlefield.
- Tinker/recursion shells: it's a free artifact for Goblin Welder, Trash for Treasure, or to sacrifice to fuel artifact-count triggers.
- Sram/Esper artifact commanders that genuinely care about the artifact type.
Don't run it in a normal white deck "just because." The extra fragility is a real cost — you're trading resilience for a synergy you may not have. If your list isn't actively rewarding artifact count or treating lands as artifacts, a basic Plains or a dual is simply better.
