The Commander

Haste

Celebration — Whenever Ash attacks, if two or more nonland permanents entered the battlefield under your control this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Ash.

Guide

Gameplan

Ash is an aggressive RW commander that grows itself by flooding the board with cheap permanents. Each turn you want to land two or more nonland permanents (tokens, cheap creatures, artifacts, enchantments) before swinging so Ash gets a +1/+1 counter and applies steadily increasing pressure. Back the beatdown with go-wide token support and combat tricks to close fast.

Strengths

  • Cheap, hasty commander that can attack the turn it lands
  • Celebration is easy to trigger with token makers and low-curve permanents
  • Snowballs into a real threat while reinforcing a go-wide board
  • RW has excellent aggressive and anthem support

Weaknesses

  • Relies on combat damage and is vulnerable to board wipes and removal
  • Single combat-damage clock can be slow against ramp/combo decks
  • Counter growth resets if Ash is killed, and it has no evasion
  • RW lacks card draw and recursion compared to other color pairs

Key Cards

  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Dumps multiple tokens onto the battlefield in one turn to reliably trigger Celebration.
  • Hofri Ghostforge — No—better: provides recursion, but more on point are cheap token engines.
  • Jeska's Will — Explosive ramp and card advantage to deploy multiple permanents in a single turn.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your flood of cheap tokens into a steady stream of cards, fixing RW's card-draw problem.
  • Intangible Virtue — Anthem that supercharges your token board for go-wide finishes alongside Ash.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve so you can consistently deploy two cheap permanents per turn, prioritizing token engines (Krenko, Hanweir Garrison, Assemble the Legion) and treasure/clue makers. Add evasion and protection for Ash (Swiftfoot Boots, Boots of Speed, combat tricks) and finishers like Craterhoof-style mass pumps in white (Overwhelming Stampede, Triumph of the Hordes). Improve card flow with Skullclamp, Reconnaissance Mission alternatives, and impactful ramp like Smothering Tithe to keep the gas flowing.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting repeatedly with a counter-pumped Ash for commander damage
  • ▸Overrunning the table with a wide token board plus anthems and Overrun effects
  • ▸Burst burn finishers off cards like Jeska's Will or impulsive token swarms

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide Aggro — Token makers naturally satisfy Celebration while building a wide, anthem-boosted board.
  • Voltron Aggro — Ash's accumulating +1/+1 counters reward suiting it up with equipment and combat tricks.
  • Spellslinger Aristocrats-lite — Cheap permanent-based spells and treasure makers trigger Celebration while feeding sacrifice value.
