BuildCard details

The Commander

Sacrifice an Atog creature: Atogatog gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the sacrificed creature's power.

Guide

Gameplan

Atogatog is a five-color Atog tribal payoff that turns your little Atogs into fuel: chump-block, then sacrifice the Atog to pump Atogatog and swing for huge, often lethal commander damage. In practice most builds lean on the unrestricted WUBRG identity to play a goodstuff/Voltron hybrid, using Atog creatures plus sac outlets and protection to push through 21 combat damage. Early turns develop ramp and small Atogs, then you assemble a payoff and alpha-strike or pivot to a five-color combo finish.

Strengths

  • Full WUBRG color identity gives access to the best removal, ramp, tutors, and answers in the format
  • Sacrifice ability dodges removal-based blowouts by letting you respond and trade Atogs for a bigger threat
  • Commander-damage Voltron plan can kill out of nowhere with a single pump-and-swing
  • Atogs make excellent free sacrifice fodder for blink, aristocrats, and reanimator subthemes

Weaknesses

  • Atogatog itself is fragile—remove or block it and your whole turn fizzles
  • Tribal payoff is narrow; pure Atog tribal is low-power and clunky
  • Heavily reliant on the commander, making it vulnerable to commander hate and repeated removal
  • Five-color manabase is expensive and prone to color screw without fixing

Key Cards

  • Atog — The cheapest Atog body and a natural sacrifice engine that feeds Atogatog or eats your own artifacts for value.
  • Auratog — Sacrifices enchantments for repeated pumps, enabling Voltron lines and recursion loops.
  • Lithatog — Sacrifices lands or artifacts for evasive pumps, making it both a payoff and a flexible Atog body.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Gives Atogatog protection, evasion, and ramp, turning Voltron swings into lethal commander damage.
  • Chromatic Lantern — Fixes the demanding five-color manabase so you can cast anything reliably.
  • Cryptic Command — Represents the kind of premium WUBRG interaction that protects your fragile general and stalls aggression.

Upgrade Path

Push power by trimming weak vanilla Atogs and adding premium fixing (fetch-shock-dual base, Chromatic Lantern, Prismatic Omen) plus tutors like Demonic Tutor and Enlightened Tutor to find your equipment and protection. Lean into a focused plan—either tight Voltron with Swords, Lightning Greaves, and double-strike enablers, or a backup combo so you aren't fully reliant on a fragile commander. Add efficient interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, counterspells) to defend your alpha-strike turns.

Archetypes

  • Tribal — All Atog creatures synergize as sacrifice fodder and individual sac-engine payoffs.
  • Five-Color Goodstuff — WUBRG identity lets you jam the format's best ramp, removal, and bombs around a flexible core.
  • Aristocrats — Free sacrifice outlets on Atogs pair naturally with death triggers, drain effects, and reanimation.
