The Commander

Double strike (This creature deals both first-strike and regular combat damage.)

{4}: Double Casey Jones's power until end of turn. Any player may activate this ability.

Guide

Gameplan

Casey Jones is a mono-red Voltron beater that ends games out of nowhere by doubling its power for {4} (multiple times) and connecting with double strike for lethal commander damage. Suit Casey up with evasion and protection, hold open mana, then double power one or more times the turn you swing.

Strengths

  • Double strike means each power-doubling effectively quadruples combat damage, so it kills fast
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that can come down early and pressure the table
  • Mono-red gives access to the best fast mana, aggression, and burn the format offers
  • Threatens lethal commander damage from a single unblocked hit

Weaknesses

  • Classic Voltron fragility: one removal spell sets you back hard
  • Needs to connect, so flyers, fog, and big blockers neutralize it
  • The {4} ability is symmetric—any player can use it, which can backfire to push your Casey into bad attacks or fuel an opponent
  • Mono-red lacks card advantage and struggles against go-wide token swarms

Key Cards

  • Embercleave — Doubles strike stacks with extra power and is cheap on a crowded board, often delivering a one-shot.
  • Fireshrieker — Redundant double strike insurance so a single removal spell doesn't end your clock.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees Casey connects for the doubled, double-struck commander-damage kill.
  • Berserkers' Onslaught — Grants double strike to your team and protects against losing Casey's keyword to removal.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste keep Casey safe and let it attack the turn it lands.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Indestructible plus a free attach makes Casey resilient and adds power for the doubling math.

Upgrade Path

Add more reliable evasion and protection—Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves, and Robe of the Archmagi—so Casey both survives and connects every turn. Layer in damage multipliers like Gratuitous Violence and Dictate of the Twins-style payoffs, plus extra-combat spells (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant) to chain hits. Tighten the mana with Sol Ring, fast rocks, and ramp so you can double power multiple times in one turn for explosive kills.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage: double Casey's power, connect with double strike for 21+
  • ▸Trample or evasion plus a power-double for a massive one-shot to one opponent
  • ▸Burn finish (Fireball/Comet Storm) after combat fails to close

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Casey's double strike plus power-doubling turns a single connecting hit into a commander-damage kill.
  • Aggro — A cheap red threat that pressures life totals early and closes with burn and combat.
  • Combo (damage doubling) — Stacking Gratuitous Violence, Fireshrieker, and the {4} ability multiplies damage to absurd one-shot numbers.
