The Commander

Paradox — Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with "{2}, {T}, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Graham O'Brien rewards casting spells from zones other than your hand—graveyard, exile, library—turning each into a Food token you can sacrifice for life or feed to artifact/sacrifice payoffs. As a Doctor's companion, you'll usually pair him with a Doctor to expand your colors and your spell-recursion toolbox, then snowball value through flashback, foretell, cascade, and impulse-draw effects.

Strengths

  • Generates incremental, repeatable value with almost no setup once your engine is online
  • Doctor's companion flexibility lets you splash into far stronger color combinations
  • Food synergizes with lifegain, sacrifice, and artifact archetypes for free payoffs
  • Mono-green base means cheap, resilient ramp and recursion to keep casting from exile/graveyard

Weaknesses

  • Graham alone is low-impact—he does nothing without spells cast outside your hand
  • Food tokens are slow and require additional payoffs to matter
  • Relies heavily on a strong Doctor partner to provide a real win plan
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and exile-zone disruption that shut off the engine

Key Cards

  • Past in Flames — Gives all your graveyard spells flashback, letting one turn spawn a flood of Food triggers.
  • Underworld Breach — Repeatedly recast spells from the graveyard, each casting making Food and fueling combo turns.
  • Trail of Crumbs — Turns your Food surplus into a card-advantage engine that recurs permanents from your library.
  • Cauldron Familiar — With Food sacrifice it becomes a recursive drain loop that your Graham tokens directly feed.
  • Witch's Oven — Reliably converts creatures into Food, complementing the tokens Graham makes for sacrifice synergies.

Upgrade Path

Pick a powerful, build-around Doctor as your partner to gain colors and a focused win plan, then load up on flashback, foretell, and cascade spells so every cast triggers Graham. Add efficient sacrifice outlets and Food payoffs like Trail of Crumbs and Cauldron Familiar, and tighten the manabase with fast green ramp and graveyard recursion to keep the engine firing.
