BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Kefka enters or attacks, each player discards a card. Then you draw a card for each card type among cards discarded this way.

{8}: Each opponent sacrifices a permanent of their choice. Transform Kefka. Activate only as a sorcery.

Flying

Whenever an opponent loses life during your turn, you draw that many cards.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Kefka turn 5, then grind value: every ETB/attack forces a group discard that refills your hand based on card-type diversity. Use disruption and removal to whittle the board, then pay {8} to strip permanents and flip into Ruler of Ruin, whose flying body and 'draw when opponents lose life' trigger turns any burn, drain, or aristocrats damage into explosive card advantage that fuels a finisher.

Strengths

  • Repeatable group discard that doubles as card draw, snowballing hands while disrupting opponents.
  • Backside converts every point of opponent life loss on your turn into cards — combos with mass damage and drain effects.
  • Grixis gives access to the format's best removal, card draw, and combo support.
  • Acts as both a value engine and a stax-lite piece via the {8} sacrifice ability.

Weaknesses

  • Front side draws nothing unless discarded cards have varied types, so it can whiff against empty hands.
  • Five mana and fragile — vulnerable to removal before it generates value, and flipping costs a steep {8}.
  • Symmetrical discard can fill opponents' graveyards, helping reanimator/recursion decks.
  • Needs setup (life-loss sources) to make Ruler of Ruin's draw trigger truly broken.

Key Cards

  • Megrim — Punishes every forced discard from Kefka's trigger, turning the symmetrical wheel into damage that also fuels the backside draw.
  • Liliana's Caress — Stacks with Megrim to drain opponents on each discard, generating life loss on your turn for Ruler of Ruin.
  • Toralf, God of Fury — Mass burn lets each point of overflow damage trigger Ruler of Ruin's draw on your turn.
  • Bone Miser — Each discarded card type yields extra value, supercharging Kefka's wheel into mana and cards.
  • Kederekt Parasite — Pings opponents whenever they draw, pairing with wheels and stacking life-loss triggers under the flipped Kefka.
  • Underworld Dreams — Anytime opponents refill from your discard effects, they bleed life that converts into your cards.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dockside Extortionist, signets) to deploy Kefka earlier and reach the {8} flip sooner. Lean into a critical mass of life-loss enablers — symmetrical drain enchantments and mass-damage spells like Toralf or Comet Storm — so Ruler of Ruin draws absurd numbers, and tighten the curve with premium Grixis interaction (Dack Fayden, Bloodchief Ascension, Notion Thief). For a hard combo, pair life-loss draw triggers with wheels or untap loops to deck-draw into a single big finisher.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Flip to Ruler of Ruin and use mass burn/drain to draw your whole library, then close with a finisher.
  • ▸Beat down with a 6/6 flyer while drawing cards off incidental damage.
  • ▸Drain opponents to death with Megrim/Underworld Dreams effects amplified by repeated discards.
  • ▸Assemble a draw-loop combo (e.g., Kederekt Parasite + wheel) for lethal life loss.

Archetypes

  • Wheels/Discard Punisher — Kefka repeatedly forces discards, so Megrim-style payoffs and wheel effects turn disruption into damage and draw.
  • Spellslinger Burn — Grixis burn and mass-damage spells trigger Ruler of Ruin's draw, refilling for more spells.
  • Aristocrats/Drain — Drain effects that hit opponents on your turn feed the backside's life-loss card draw.
  • Control — Repeatable hand attack plus the {8} sacrifice and flying clock supports a grindy, disruptive control plan.
