BuildCard details

The Commander

When Niko enters, create two Shard tokens. (They're enchantments with "{2}, Sacrifice this token: Scry 1, then draw a card.")

{2}, {T}: Exile target nonlegendary creature you control. Shards you control become copies of it until the next end step. Return it to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.

Guide

Gameplan

Niko is a value engine that pumps out Shard tokens for card advantage, then converts those Shards into copies of your best nonlegendary creature while simultaneously blinking the original for an ETB trigger. You build a board of high-impact ETB creatures and tokens, generate more Shards (and copies) than your opponents can answer, and grind out incremental advantage until you bury the table in card draw, tokens, and value triggers.

Strengths

  • Built-in repeatable card advantage from Shard tokens and Niko's draw/scry
  • Doubles down on powerful ETB creatures by copying them onto Shards while blinking the original
  • Strong in the resilient, low-curve UW shell with great removal and protection
  • Tokens-matter and blink synergies overlap cleanly with the Shard mechanic
  • Niko herself is cheap (MV 4) and rebuildable after removal

Weaknesses

  • Niko's copy ability is mana- and token-intensive, making it slow to snowball
  • Needs nonlegendary ETB creatures already in play to extract value
  • UW lacks reliable ramp and big mana, so explosive turns are hard
  • Copies are temporary (only until end of turn) unless you have additional blink/copy support
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your tokens and creature board at once

Key Cards

  • Eternal Witness — A nonlegendary ETB target whose copies recur multiple cards as Shards transform and the original blinks.
  • Mulldrifter — Turning Shards into copies of it draws a pile of cards while the original blinks for more.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles your Shard tokens (and any other tokens), multiplying card draw and copy fodder.
  • Doubling Season — Each Niko trigger nets four Shards, supercharging the engine and your token plan.
  • Solitude — Premium evasive removal whose ETB you can copy across Shards for a board-clearing exile spree.
  • Spark Double — Adds extra copies and blink-style value, deepening the token and ETB engine.

Upgrade Path

Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives) and free flicker/copy pieces to make every Niko activation generate runaway value. Lean into high-impact nonlegendary ETB creatures (Solitude, Mulldrifter, Eternal Witness, Archaeomancer) and cheap repeatable blink like Ephemerate to abuse them outside Niko. Tighten the curve with strong UW staples—Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, Cyclonic Rift, Teferi's Protection—and add a clean wincon such as Approach of the Second Sun or a Felidar Guardian flicker loop.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind out overwhelming card and board advantage, then close with go-wide token attacks
  • ▸Copy an evasive or beefy ETB creature across multiple Shards for a lethal swing
  • ▸Assemble an ETB loop (e.g., copied bounce/flicker creatures) into incremental value lock
  • ▸Deploy a finisher like Approach of the Second Sun or anthem effects backed by token bodies

Archetypes

  • Blink — Niko's exile-and-return ability is a built-in blink engine for retriggering nonlegendary ETB creatures.
  • Tokens — Constant Shard generation plus token doublers floods the board with bodies and draw fuel.
  • Value Control — UW gives counters, wraths, and removal while Shards keep refilling your hand.
  • ETB Combo — Copying creatures like Solitude or Mulldrifter onto multiple Shards chains massive enter-the-battlefield effects.
