Why is this card good?

Mulldrifter is the gold standard of value creatures — a 2-for-1 that's stayed playable for nearly two decades because card advantage never goes out of style. The flexibility is what sells it. Hardcast for {4}{U}, you get a 2/2 flyer plus two cards — a fine, fair body that chips in damage. Evoked for {2}{U}, it's basically a slightly overcosted Divination that triggers all your ETB and death payoffs along the way. That dual nature makes it a slam-dunk in blink/flicker decks (Brago, Roon, Aminatou) where you reuse the draw repeatedly, and in aristocrats/reanimator shells where the body becomes fuel — evoke it, sac the trigger, then reanimate for more value. Tokens and Elemental tribal also appreciate it. When NOT to play it: hyper-competitive cEDH decks want cheaper, more impactful card advantage, and pure spellslinger or aggressive lists may find a 5-mana 2/2 too slow. Otherwise, it's reliable glue for blue midrange.

To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost you're paying (such as an evoke cost), add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The mana value of the spell is determined by only its mana cost, no matter what the total cost to cast that spell was.

  • 2021-03-19

If you pay the evoke cost, you can have Mulldrifter's own triggered ability resolve before the evoke triggered ability. You can cast spells after that ability resolves but before you have to sacrifice Mulldrifter.
