BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying, hexproof from multicolored

Whenever Niv-Mizzet deals combat damage to a player, it deals X damage to any target, target player draws X cards, and you gain X life, where X is the number of different color pairs among permanents you control that are exactly two colors.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with as many two-color (gold) permanents as possible, then connect with the 6/6 flier to trigger massive burn, card draw, and lifegain scaled to your distinct guild pairs. You ramp into Niv early, protect him, and turn each combat hit into a snowballing advantage that quickly buries the table.

Strengths

  • Hexproof from multicolored dodges most removal/auras in gold-heavy metas
  • Built-in card advantage, burn, and lifegain off a single combat trigger
  • Five-color identity allows the best gold staples, fixing, and removal
  • Flying evasion makes connecting reliable
  • Scales fast—10 distinct pairs means 10 damage, 10 cards, 10 life per hit

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on the commander; tax and repeated removal slow it badly
  • Needs many distinct two-color permanents, which can strain mana fixing
  • Vulnerable to colorless or monocolored removal, edicts, and board wipes
  • Combat-dependent—blockers, fog, and pillowfort effects neutralize it
  • Greedy five-color manabase risks color-screw without strong fixing

Key Cards

  • Maze's End — Caring about Gates and guild pairs synergizes with a multicolor build and provides an alternate win.
  • Prismatic Omen — Turns your lands into all colors, smoothing the demanding five-color manabase.
  • Chromatic Lantern — Fixes any color and ramps, essential to cast Niv and your gold spells on curve.
  • Rampaging Brontodon — Representative of cheap two-color permanents that pump your X count cheaply.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees Niv connects to fire off the trigger even against full boards.
  • Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud let Niv attack immediately and survive removal windows.
  • Smothering Tithe — A premier gold ramp/advantage engine that also counts toward your color pairs.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize cheap, distinct two-color permanents and flawless five-color fixing (fetch/dual lands, Prismatic Omen, Chromatic Lantern) so Niv's X is high and consistent. Add protection and evasion (Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak) plus efficient interaction to keep him connecting. Push power further with extra-combat effects, fast mana, and tutors to assemble the engine before opponents stabilize.

  • ▸Voltron commander damage via flying evasion
  • ▸Overwhelming card advantage from triggers converting into a grindy win
  • ▸Alternate routes like Maze's End or large finishers fueled by gained life and cards

Archetypes

  • Goodstuff Five-Color — His ability rewards simply playing the best gold permanents across all guilds.
  • Voltron — Hexproof from multicolored and flying make him a resilient beater that wins through combat damage.
  • Control — WUBRG access plus the burn/draw/lifegain trigger supports a removal-heavy grindy build.
  • Superfriends/Multicolor Tribal — Loading up on two-color planeswalkers and permanents maximizes X.
