BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

When Niv-Mizzet enters, reveal the top ten cards of your library. For each color pair, choose a card that's exactly those colors from among them. Put the chosen cards into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast a 5-color goodstuff midrange/control deck built almost entirely of two-color gold cards so Niv-Mizzet refunds 5-10 cards on each cast. Use that recurring card advantage to grind through removal, ramp into Niv, and overwhelm with sheer quality. You win by accruing an insurmountable advantage and then deploying a finisher or assembling a five-color combo.

Strengths

  • Insane card advantage—each Niv cast can draw up to 10 cards
  • Access to all five colors means best-in-class removal, ramp, and answers
  • Hard to keep down; recast Niv repeatedly thanks to wedge fixing
  • Deckbuilding constraint (all gold cards) naturally yields high card quality

Weaknesses

  • Brutal mana base requirements; color-screw is real without heavy fixing
  • Niv costs 5 and gives no immediate board impact, only cards
  • Building exclusively two-color cards limits access to powerful mono-color staples
  • Commander tax and removal make recasting expensive over time
  • Slower to close games than focused combo or aggro decks

Key Cards

  • Niv-Mizzet Reborn — The engine—every cast can refill your hand with up to ten gold cards.
  • Chromatic Lantern — Turns every land into all five colors, fixing the punishing mana base.
  • Prismatic Omen — Makes all your lands every basic type, enabling fetchlands and perfect fixing.
  • The World Tree — Fixes any color and can pull all your gods, ideal for a five-color base.
  • Jodah, the Unifier — A multicolor payoff that cheats out legends and pumps your gold creatures.
  • Maelstrom Nexus — Cascade on your first spell each turn snowballs your value engine.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize the mana base above all: add fetchlands with Prismatic Omen/Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, dual lands, and signets/Talismans to consistently cast Niv on turn five. Trim weaker gold filler for high-impact two-color cards and efficient interaction, then add a dedicated win package (Notion Thief loops, Jeskai Ascendancy-style combos, or Jodah cheating in legends) so your card advantage actually converts to wins.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind to a dominant board and beat down with flyers and gold bombs
  • ▸Niv-Mizzet, Parun-style combos or pinger loops for instant damage
  • ▸Out-value opponents until a finisher like Approach or a big swing closes
  • ▸Assemble a five-color combo (e.g., untappers + Niv triggers) for the kill

Archetypes

  • Five-Color Goodstuff — Niv rewards stuffing the deck with the best two-color cards in the game.
  • Control — WUBRG gives access to every counterspell, board wipe, and removal piece, with Niv as the card engine.

  • Combo — Five colors enable infinite combos like Niv plus untap/copy effects or classic compact loops.
