BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 2 life and exile the top card of your library. You may play that card for as long as it remains exiled.

Each noncreature spell you cast from exile has conspire. (As you cast that spell, you may tap two untapped creatures you control that share a color with it. When you do, copy it and you may choose new targets for the copy.)

Guide

Gameplan

Rassilon turns your upkeep into a recurring impulse-draw engine, exiling the top card each turn (paying 2 life) and letting you cast it whenever. The payoff is conspire on every noncreature spell cast from exile: tap two same-colored creatures to copy your removal, card draw, counterspells, and bombs for free. You grind value, double up your best instants and sorceries, and bury the table in two-for-ones until a copied finisher or repeated removal closes the game.

Strengths

  • Free card advantage every turn that ignores your hand size and dodges discard
  • Doubling noncreature spells via conspire massively amplifies removal, draw, and burn
  • Works in the command zone, so the engine comes back if Rassilon dies
  • Dimir gives access to premium counters, removal, and tutors to set up the top card

Weaknesses

  • Steady life loss from upkeep adds up against aggro and can be punishing
  • Conspire requires multiple untapped, color-sharing creatures, which a spell-heavy build often lacks
  • Relies on Rassilon staying alive and on the battlefield to function
  • Top-of-library cards are random without scry/manipulation, so impulse draws can whiff

Key Cards

  • Sensei's Divining Top — Controls what Rassilon exiles each upkeep so you never waste the impulse draw.
  • Brainstorm — Sets up the top card before upkeep and is a cheap noncreature spell to copy from exile.
  • Bident of Thassa — Generates a wide board of creatures so you always have fodder to pay conspire.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Offsets the life loss and weaponizes copied spells into a one-shot kill.
  • Cyclonic Rift — A copied overloaded Rift is an instant blowout and game-ender from exile.
  • Mystic Confluence — Conspire copies it for a devastating modal counter/bounce/draw two-for-one.

Upgrade Path

Add cheap card-selection (Ponder, Mystic Sanctuary, Scroll Rack) so your impulse draws are never wasted, and load up on token producers or mana dorks to reliably fuel conspire. Prioritize high-impact noncreature spells worth copying—board wipes, modal instants, and tutors—and include lifegain like Aetherflux Reservoir to convert the engine into a win. Tutors such as Demonic Tutor and fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dimir Signet) raise consistency and let Rassilon stick earlier.

  • Control — Copied counterspells and removal let you answer threats while building card advantage.
  • Combo — Aetherflux Reservoir plus copied storm-count spells or infinite loops close games quickly.
