BuildCard details

The Commander

First strike, protection from red

When Tivadar enters, destroy target Goblin.

Guide

Gameplan

Tivadar is a mono-white Knights/Equipment voltron commander who plays aggressive, resilient creature beatdown backed by protection effects and a strong anti-red angle. Curve out with cheap knights and white aggro creatures, stick equipment or anthems, and swing wide or tall while Tivadar's first strike and protection from red let him attack and block profitably. The Goblin destruction is mostly a niche bonus that occasionally blanks an opposing creature on entry.

Strengths

  • Cheap, evasive-blocking first striker that's hard for red decks to interact with
  • Excellent leader for the well-supported mono-white Knights tribe
  • Protection from red shrugs off most red removal and combat in those matchups
  • Low mana value means easy recasting and aggressive early starts

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white lacks card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
  • The ETB is dead in most pods that aren't running Goblins
  • Vulnerable to non-red removal and board wipes despite protection
  • Limited reach—struggles to close games if the board stalls

Key Cards

  • Haakon, Stromgald Scourge — Lets you recast knights from the graveyard repeatedly for grindy value in a Knights build.
  • Skullclamp — Mono-white's premier card-draw engine, refueling go-wide and knight token boards.
  • Smuggler's Copter — Cheap evasive equipment-creature that filters cards and crews easily off small knights.
  • Knight Exemplar — Anthem plus indestructibility makes your entire knight squad sticky and resilient.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Grants protection and card draw, turning Tivadar or any knight into a real threat.

Upgrade Path

Lean into mono-white's best generic staples—Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, and Skullclamp—to fix the color's card-advantage and ramp shortcomings. Add efficient equipment (the Swords cycle, Shadowspear) and anthems (Benalish Marshal, Knight Exemplar) to push the aggressive plan, and include protective pieces like Heroic Intervention's white equivalents (Eldrazi Monument, Flawless Maneuver) to beat board wipes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide knight/token boards pumped by anthems and equipment
  • ▸Voltron commander damage with Tivadar carrying swords
  • ▸Grindy attrition via Haakon recursion and Skullclamp card flow

Archetypes

  • Knights Tribal — Tivadar is a Knight with cheap stats, slotting into white's deep tribal Knights package as a curve filler and lord target.
  • Voltron — First strike and protection from red make him an efficient equipment carrier that survives combat and red removal.
  • Tokens/Aggro — Mono-white anthems and go-wide token makers turn his low curve into a fast clock.
