BuildCard details

The Commander

Vigilance, menace

Descend 8 — {4}{U}{B}: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield with a finality counter on it. Activate only if there are eight or more permanent cards in your graveyard and only as a sorcery. (If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.)

Guide

Gameplan

Uchbenbak is a sticky, evasive Dimir beater that thrives on self-mill and graveyard density. You fuel your graveyard with cards, attack with a vigilant menace threat, and recur it via Descend 8 when it dies. Mid-game you grind value through reanimation and self-mill payoffs while chipping in evasive damage.

Strengths

  • Vigilance + menace makes it both a reliable attacker and blocker that's hard to chump.
  • Built-in recursion lets it dodge most removal and reduce dependence on the command zone.
  • Strong synergy with self-mill, mill payoffs, and graveyard matters in two great colors.
  • Cheap commander tax avoidance—Descend brings it back for less and ignores commander tax.

Weaknesses

  • Only a 5-mana 5/4-ish body with no inherent card advantage—offers little raw power by itself.
  • Exile-based removal, finality counter, and graveyard hate permanently shut down its recursion.
  • Needs eight permanent cards in the yard before Descend works, which can be slow early.
  • BU lacks board wipes and ramp, so it can fall behind go-wide and ramp strategies.

Key Cards

  • Altar of Dementia — Sacrifices Uchbenbak to fuel itself and fills graveyards toward Descend 8 instantly.
  • Hedron Crab — Cheap, repeatable self-mill that stocks your graveyard with permanent cards fast.
  • Mesmeric Orb — Aggressively mills you each untap, reliably enabling Descend and graveyard payoffs.
  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation lets your mill double as ramp into huge threats.
  • Bruvac the Grandiloquent — Turns mill enablers into a legitimate mill win condition in U/B.
  • Syr Konrad, the Grim — Converts self-mill and creature death into direct damage as an alternate wincon.

Upgrade Path

Decide between a dedicated mill kill (Bruvac, Maddening Cacophony, Fleet Swallower) and a reanimator value plan (Animate Dead, Entomb, big payoffs), since trying both dilutes consistency. Add fast self-mill and dual lands plus protection like Lazav or counterspells to shield your engines from graveyard hate. Tighten ramp and card draw (Phyrexian Arena, signets) so you reliably hit Descend 8 and keep the recursion online.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Mill opponents out with Bruvac, Hedron Crab, and Mesmeric Orb effects.
  • ▸Reanimate or beat down with recurring evasive threats including Uchbenbak.
  • ▸Drain the table via Syr Konrad or aristocrat death triggers off self-mill.
  • ▸Recursive sac loops with Altar of Dementia to overwhelm or deck out opponents.

Archetypes

  • Mill — Self-mill enablers double as a mill kill, with Uchbenbak and Bruvac amplifying the plan.
  • Reanimator — Filling your graveyard sets up cheating big creatures back with reanimation spells.
  • Aristocrats — Uchbenbak's free sac-and-return loop pairs with death-trigger payoffs and sac outlets.
  • Self-Mill Value — Descend and graveyard-matters cards reward stacking permanents in the yard.
