Zimone and Dina

Mana value3Rank#9,557
BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever you draw your second card each turn, target opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.

{T}, Sacrifice another creature: Draw a card. You may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped. If you control eight or more lands, repeat this process once.

Guide

Gameplan

Turn the corner by sacrificing creatures to Zimone and Dina to draw and ramp lands, triggering the 'second draw' drain on opponents while gaining life. Build a steady engine of tokens or cheap fodder to fuel the activated ability, then convert extra-draw triggers into a slow drain or assemble a combo finish. Once you control eight or more lands, every activation digs two cards deep and lets you cheat lands into play.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage and ramp on one body for just three mana
  • Repeatable life drain that pressures all opponents through the second-draw trigger
  • Sultai colors give access to the best removal, tutors, and graveyard recursion
  • Strong synergy with token producers and free sacrifice fodder
  • Doubles as an aristocrats payoff and a value engine simultaneously

Weaknesses

  • Activated ability requires another creature to sacrifice, so an empty board stalls it
  • Card draw and life drain are grindy and can be slow without enablers
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and creature board wipes that strip your fodder
  • The eight-land threshold for the extra draw takes time to reach
  • Commander is a removal magnet and the deck leans heavily on it

Key Cards

  • Underworld Breach — Recurs sacrificed creatures and combo pieces to fuel endless activations and draws.
  • Bontu's Monument — Cheapens creatures and drains opponents each cast, layering damage onto your draw triggers.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure off every sacrifice, paying for repeated activations and ramping mana.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sac outlet plus mana that turns extra creatures into engine fuel and combo enablers.
  • Teferi's Ageless Insight — Doubles draws so you reliably hit the second-card drain trigger every turn.
  • Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Makes nontoken creatures recur after sacrifice, enabling infinite loops with a free sac outlet.
  • Bloodletter of Aclazotz — Doubles the life loss from the second-draw trigger for explosive drain.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Jeweled Lotus) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor) to assemble engine pieces faster. Lean into a dedicated combo line such as Mikaeus plus a free sac outlet, or Underworld Breach loops, and add draw doublers like Alrund's Epiphany-style payoffs or Bloodletter to turn triggers lethal. Tighten the curve with cheap token makers and Treasure producers so you can chain activations the turn the commander lands.

  • ▸Infinite sacrifice/recursion loop draining the table to zero
  • ▸Beating down with a wide token board or a large threat after ramping ahead
  • ▸Drawing into and casting a finisher like Exsanguinate or a big X spell

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — The sacrifice ability rewards a constant supply of fodder while draining opponents.
  • Tokens — Token generators provide endless creatures to sacrifice for card and land advantage.
