The Commander

Double strike, vigilance

Whenever Agrus Kos enters or attacks, choose up to one target creature. If it's suspected, exile it. Otherwise, suspect it. (A suspected creature has menace and can't block.)

Guide

Gameplan

Suit up Agrus Kos and beat down with double strike + vigilance while using his enter/attack trigger as repeatable, unconditional removal: suspect a creature one turn, then exile it the next (or instantly exile anything already suspected by another source). You grind the board down to nothing while building a Voltron threat, then close with commander damage or a wide RW board.

Strengths

  • Repeatable exile-based removal that ignores indestructible, ward, and hexproof-adjacent protections (it's targeted but exile is hard to recover from)
  • Double strike + vigilance makes him an efficient Voltron payoff and a strong attacker even without buffs
  • Suspect synergizes with sacrifice/menace and 'attack each combat' effects
  • Cheap to cast at 4 mana in aggressive RW; comes online quickly

Weaknesses

  • Removal hinges on a vulnerable commander—if he's killed, your removal engine and clock both disappear
  • Single target per trigger makes him slow against go-wide token strategies
  • Suspect grants menace and 'can't block,' which can accidentally help opposing attackers that you don't follow up on
  • RW lacks card draw and ramp, so you can fall behind grindy or combo decks

Key Cards

  • Swiftfoot Boots — Haste lets Agrus attack the turn he lands and hexproof protects your removal-and-damage engine.
  • Lightning Greaves — Shroud plus haste keeps your commander swinging and triggering every turn.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Doubled by double strike for huge damage, card draw, and incidental removal—a premier Voltron equipment.
  • Aurelia, the Warleader — Extra combat means a second Agrus trigger each turn, letting you suspect and exile in one cycle.
  • Aggravated Assault — Repeatable extra combats turn the suspect-then-exile loop into per-turn mass removal.
  • Bruenor Battlehammer — Slashes equip costs and pumps Agrus, accelerating the Voltron plan.
  • Smothering Tithe — Rare RW ramp/card-quality engine that fixes the color pair's resource problems.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a tight equipment package (Sword of Feast and Famine, Colossus Hammer + Sigarda's Aid, Embercleave) and protection (Sword of Hearth and Home, Teferi's Protection) so a single connection ends games. Add extra-combat enablers (Aurelia, Combat Celebrant, Aggravated Assault + Sword of Feast and Famine for infinite combats) to turn the trigger into per-turn mass exile. Shore up RW's weaknesses with fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe) and card advantage (Esper Sentinel, Tithing engines, Idol of Oblivion).

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via equipment-pumped double strike
  • ▸Going wide with RW tokens behind an unblockable suspected threat
  • ▸Extra-combat loops (Aggravated Assault/Aurelia) for repeated lethal swings
  • ▸Grinding the board to nothing with repeatable exile, then attacking unopposed

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Double strike and vigilance make him an ideal carrier for equipment and auras to deal lethal commander damage.
  • Removal Control/Midrange — His suspect-then-exile trigger is a recurring removal engine that grinds opponents' creatures away.
  • Extra Combat Aggro — Extra-combat and 'attacks again' effects multiply his triggers for faster exiles and more damage.
  • Boros Aristocrats — Suspect's 'can't block' plus sac outlets and menace synergies enable aggressive aristocrat lines.
