BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying, lifelink

Healing Tears — At the beginning of your end step, return target creature card with mana value X or less from your graveyard to the battlefield, where X is the amount of life you gained this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Celestine turns lifegain into recursion: gain life each turn, then at your end step reanimate creatures from your graveyard whose mana value is at or below the life you gained. Build around big lifegain swings to bring back larger threats, sacrifice fodder, and value creatures repeatedly for grindy mono-white attrition. Win by overwhelming the board with recurred bodies, aristocrat drains, or a recursion engine that opponents can't keep up with.

Strengths

  • Free reanimation every turn that snowballs once lifegain is online
  • Lifelink on a 4/4 flyer that fuels its own ability when she connects
  • Mono-white consistency and access to powerful white staples and tutors-lite
  • Excellent in attrition matchups; out-grinds removal-light tables

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white card draw is poor, leading to flooding and topdeck dependence
  • Healing Tears only triggers on your end step, so it's slow and removable
  • Needs both lifegain and graveyard fodder online to function
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and board wipes that strip her engine

Key Cards

  • Soul Warden — Cheap repeatable lifegain that quietly inflates your X each turn for free reanimation.
  • Archangel of Thune — Big lifegain triggers raise X and pump your reanimated army at once.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Massive incidental lifegain pushes X sky-high and offers a direct win condition.
  • Felidar Sovereign — Lifegain payoff and a 30-life alternate win the deck naturally enables.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Turns every lifegain into counters and amplifies lifegain to grow X.
  • Sun Titan — Recurrable value engine that's reliably within reach of Celestine's X.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient lifegain enablers (Soul Warden, Heliod, Sun-Crowned, Archangel of Thune) so X is reliably high, and pair them with sacrifice outlets like Viscera Seer plus a drain payoff such as Blood Artist to convert recursion into wins. Improve mono-white's card flow with Esper Sentinel, Mangara, the Diplomat, and impulse draw, then add protection like Teferi's Protection and Flawless Maneuver to defend the engine.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain loops with sacrifice outlets and reanimated fodder
  • ▸Felidar Sovereign or Aetherflux Reservoir lifegain wins
  • ▸Going wide and beating down with a recurred creature army
  • ▸Repeated value ETBs grinding opponents out of resources

Archetypes

  • Lifegain — Healing Tears scales directly with life gained, rewarding a dedicated lifegain shell.
  • Reanimator — She returns creatures from your graveyard every turn for free, no spell required.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice fodder dies, gets reanimated, and drains opponents in a loop.
  • Value/Midrange — Recurring ETB creatures provides relentless incremental advantage.
