BuildCard details

The Commander

Vigilance (Attacking doesn't cause this creature to tap.)

When Donatello enters, tap up to three target creatures your opponents control. Put a stun counter on each of them. (If a permanent with a stun counter would become untapped, remove one from it instead.)

Guide

Gameplan

Donatello is a mono-blue control/tempo piece who lands as a 6-mana value engine: when he enters, you tap and stun up to three opposing creatures, neutralizing blockers or attackers for a turn. You stall the board with counterspells, card draw, and bounce while assembling either an artifact/big-mana plan or a flooded blue value engine, then close with a recurring blink/flicker loop on Donatello or a finisher payoff. Use his vigilance to attack and still keep mana up for interaction.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, scalable removal-on-a-stick: every recast or blink stuns three creatures, buying huge tempo
  • Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counterspells, card advantage, and protection
  • Vigilance lets him pressure life totals while holding up interaction or blockers
  • Strong synergy with flicker/blink effects that re-trigger his ETB
  • Color consistency makes mana easy and fixing trivial

Weaknesses

  • Mono-blue struggles with permanent removal and enchantments/artifacts once they resolve
  • Stun counters are temporary and only delay creatures, not destroy them
  • 6 mana is slow and the ETB is symmetrical only against one opponent's board at a time
  • Lacks a built-in win condition, so games can stall without a closing plan
  • Vulnerable to graveyard-proof or recursive threats that ignore tap-down

Key Cards

  • Ghostly Flicker — Reuses Donatello's ETB to stun three more creatures while also untapping permanents for value.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Soulbonds to Donatello for a repeatable blink, stunning the board every turn.
  • Cyclonic Rift — The premier mono-blue board reset that turns your stalled standoff into a lethal swing.
  • Rhystic Study — Mono-blue's best card engine to keep refueling counterspells and threats.
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — Blinks Donatello each end step for a free stun trigger and grants evasion.
  • Propaganda — Stacks with Donatello's tempo to make attacking you nearly impossible while you build.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault) and the best counterspells (Force of Will, Mana Drain, Fierce Guardianship) to defend your tempo lead. Build a tighter blink package with Deadeye Navigator and Thassa, Deep-Dwelling for repeatable stuns, and include a compact win like a clean infinite-mana outlet or Thassa's Oracle plus Tainted Pact. Round out with stax-lite pieces (Propaganda, Winter Orb) and premium card draw to outvalue the table.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload followed by an alpha strike with stunned blockers
  • ▸Voltron Donatello with vigilance plus evasion and equipment for commander damage
  • ▸An infinite blink loop (e.g., Deadeye Navigator plus mana) to lock the board and grind out wins
  • ▸A blue finisher like Blue Sun's Zenith or a big artifact creature once the board is stalled

Archetypes

  • Control — Mono-blue counters and card draw plus repeated tap-downs let you dominate the late game.
  • Blink — Flicker effects re-trigger his ETB to stun three creatures every turn, locking down boards.
  • Tempo — Vigilance plus stun counters let you race while keeping interaction open.
  • Big Mana / Artifacts — Mono-blue ramp into expensive payoffs and equipment uses Donatello as a defensive shield.
