The Commander

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, surveil 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put it into your graveyard.)

{3}{B}{B}{R}{R}: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield transformed. Activate only as a sorcery.

Flying

When Chaos dies, put it on the bottom of its owner's library.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast a steady stream of cheap noncreature spells off your 2-mana Garland to surveil every time, sculpting draws and stocking your graveyard. Use that fueled yard for reanimation, delve, flashback, and graveyard payoffs, then sacrifice or trade away Garland to bring back Chaos, a recursive 6/6 flier that keeps coming back from the bottom of your library when it dies. You grind incremental value and close with burn, big reanimated threats, or a spellslinger combo.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander that's cheap to recast and provides repeatable card filtering
  • Surveil triggers feed graveyard strategies (reanimation, delve, threshold, flashback) while smoothing draws
  • Built-in resilience: Garland flips into Chaos, a 6/6 evasive body that dodges exile-less removal by tucking to library bottom
  • Aggressive BR color pairing rewards a low curve of impulse draw, burn, and rituals

Weaknesses

  • Surveil only triggers on your turn off your spells—no protection or evasion for Garland himself early
  • Chaos costs a hefty 3BBRR and only comes online after Garland dies, making it slow
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) blanks the surveil value engine
  • No card advantage by itself; relies on the deck's payoffs to convert surveil into real value
  • Two colors limits access to counterspells and broad interaction

Key Cards

  • Underworld Breach — Turns your stocked graveyard into a spell engine, enabling explosive recursion and combo finishes.
  • Body Double — Reanimates the best creature surveiled into your yard, leveraging the graveyard Garland fills.
  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation that punishes the self-mill, converting surveil discards into huge threats.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Pays you back for the cheap noncreature spells that fuel Garland's surveil, chaining into big turns.
  • Bonecrusher Giant — Modal spell-creature that triggers surveil as removal and stays as a reanimation target later.
  • Mishra's Bauble — Free spell that triggers surveil and replaces itself, smoothing every turn at no cost.
  • Faithless Looting — Cheap dig that bins reanimation fuel while pulling a surveil trigger.

Upgrade Path

Lower the curve with free and one-mana spells (Mishra's Bauble, Lightning Bolt, Gut Shot) to maximize surveil triggers, and add fast mana like Jeska's Will and rituals to power out Chaos or combos early. Lean harder into reanimation targets and enablers (Persist, Animate Dead, Bone Shards) so the self-mill always converts to threats. Top end with Underworld Breach plus a payoff and tutors like Demonic Tutor to assemble a deterministic kill.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Reanimating oversized threats and beating down, backed by Chaos as an evasive recursive finisher
  • ▸Burn and direct-damage spells amplified by spellslinger payoffs like Birgi and Guttersnipe
  • ▸Underworld Breach combo turns recurring rituals and draw spells into lethal loops
  • ▸Grinding card advantage until you out-value the table and swing with Chaos repeatedly

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Every noncreature cast surveils, so a deck packed with cantrips, burn, and rituals snowballs value.
  • Reanimator — Surveil reliably stocks the graveyard, letting BR reanimation spells cheat in bombs.
  • Aristocrats — Garland wants to die to flip into Chaos, and sacrifice outlets plus death payoffs reward repeatable loops.
  • Graveyard Combo — A loaded yard powers Underworld Breach and similar engines for spell-based combo kills.
