The Commander

Firebending 1 (Whenever this creature attacks, add {R}. This mana lasts until end of combat.)

Exhaust — {3}: Put a +1/+1 counter on Jeong Jeong. When you next cast a Lesson spell this turn, copy it and you may choose new targets for the copy. (Activate each exhaust ability only once.)

Guide

Gameplan

Jeong Jeong, the Deserter is a mono-red attacker that adds extra red mana when it swings and uses its one-shot exhaust ability to grow and copy a Lesson spell for value. You play a midrange-aggro game, attacking to ramp into burn and big red payoffs while leaning on the copy effect to double impactful Lessons. Close games by converting that mana and spell volume into direct damage or a wide, hasty board.

Strengths

  • Firebending gives free red mana every combat, fueling extra spells in the second main phase
  • The exhaust ability doubles a Lesson, getting two effects from one card
  • Cheap, three-mana commander that pressures life totals early
  • Mono-red gives access to the format's best burn, impulse draw, and ramp rocks

Weaknesses

  • Lessons in red are a shallow, weak card pool, so the copy ability is often a build-around with thin payoff
  • Exhaust abilities only fire once, limiting repeatable value
  • Mono-red struggles with card advantage and answering enchantments/artifacts
  • Firebending mana is locked to combat and disappears at end of combat, so it can be awkward to use

Key Cards

  • Reduce to Memory — One of the few impactful Lessons worth copying to remove two threats at once.
  • Pop Quiz — A repeatable Lesson-style card draw effect that becomes two draws when copied.
  • Underworld Breach — Lets you recur burn and Lessons from the graveyard using all that Firebending mana.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Turns your flood of cheap red spells into ritual mana that snowballs with Firebending.
  • Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might — Amplifies your burn output so every red spell hits much harder for the win.
  • Embercleave — Snaps onto Jeong Jeong cheaply after attacks and converts Firebending swings into lethal damage.

Upgrade Path

Lean away from the Lesson gimmick and toward proven mono-red engines: add Birgi, Underworld Breach, and ritual-fueled spell chains, plus damage doublers like Torbran and Ojer Axonil to make every burn spell lethal. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Mana Vault, Jeska's Will) and cheap card advantage like Underworld Breach and impulse draw. If you keep the Lesson theme, maximize the few high-impact Lessons and add ways to recur them, otherwise treat the copy ability as marginal upside on an aggressive curve.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting with an equipped or counter-buffed Jeong Jeong for commander damage
  • ▸Burning out the table with amplified direct damage spells (Ojer Axonil, Torbran)
  • ▸Going wide with hasty tokens and alpha-striking
  • ▸A red storm/Underworld Breach loop dealing lethal in one turn

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Firebending mana funds extra instants and sorceries each combat, and the exhaust copies key spells.
  • Voltron/Aggro — A cheap body with built-in mana and counter growth wants equipment and pump to swing for big chunks.
  • Burn — Mono-red gives access to direct damage that the extra mana and Ojer-style payoffs turn lethal.
  • Storm/Combo — Cheap red spells plus Birgi and Underworld Breach can chain into a burst kill.
