BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever you activate an ability of an artifact, if it isn't a mana ability, you may pay {R}. If you do, copy that ability. You may choose new targets for the copy.

Guide

Gameplan

Kurkesh turns every nonmana artifact activated ability into a two-for-one for just {R}, so you build a mono-red artifact engine that snowballs value and eventually generates lethal or game-ending loops. Early turns ramp with mana rocks, mid-game you deploy artifacts with powerful activated abilities, and late game you chain copied activations into damage, draw, or infinite combos.

Strengths

  • Doubles powerful artifact abilities cheaply, generating huge value or instant combos
  • Mono-red consistency keeps the mana base clean and budget-friendly
  • Many infinite-combo lines win on the spot with the right artifacts
  • Flexible: card draw, removal, ramp, and damage all come from artifacts

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; removing Kurkesh shuts down the engine
  • Mono-red lacks efficient board wipes, card advantage, and interaction outside artifacts
  • Vulnerable to artifact hate (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress, Null Rod)
  • Combos can require multiple specific pieces, making the deck fragile to disruption

Key Cards

  • Mycosynth Lattice — Turns all permanents into artifacts so Kurkesh can fuel ability-based lockouts like Karn, Silver Golem.
  • Staff of Domination — With enough mana it draws cards, gains life, and untaps, and Kurkesh copies each activation for explosive value or loops.
  • Unwinding Clock — Untaps your artifacts each turn so you can activate abilities again, multiplying Kurkesh triggers.
  • Karn, Silver Golem — Animates noncreature artifacts and his ability can be copied for boardwide tempo or combo enabling.
  • Sensei's Divining Top — Copyable draw/filter ability that smooths every draw and chains with cost reducers.
  • Voltaic Construct — Untaps artifact creatures for infinite mana combos with mana-doublers like Karn-animated rocks.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana like Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, and Grim Monolith to power out Kurkesh and combo pieces early. Tighten the combo package (Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth-style copy loops, Staff of Domination, Voltaic Construct) and include a clean payoff like Walking Ballista or Aetherflux Reservoir. Round out with strong interaction—Vandalblast, Dockside Extortionist for ramp, and protection like Lightning Greaves to keep Kurkesh online.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite mana into a copyable damage/draw outlet to deal lethal or draw the deck
  • ▸Karn, Silver Golem animating artifacts plus Lattice for a beatdown or sacrifice loop
  • ▸Copied burn/ping abilities (e.g., from artifacts) to finish the table
  • ▸Walking Ballista or similar infinite-counter outlets fueled by copied activations

Archetypes

  • Artifact Combo — Kurkesh copies activated abilities to assemble infinite mana, draw, or damage loops.
  • Value Engine / Artifacts Matter — Every artifact ability becomes a two-for-one, snowballing card and board advantage.
  • Spellslinger-adjacent Stax — Copied abilities from Mycosynth Lattice plus lockpieces can grind opponents out of resources.
