BuildCard details

The Commander

Companion — Your starting deck contains only cards with odd mana values and land cards. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may put it into your hand from outside the game for {3} as a sorcery.)

If a source you control with an odd mana value would deal damage to a permanent or player, it deals double that damage to that permanent or player instead.

Guide

Gameplan

Obosh doubles all damage dealt by your odd-mana-value sources, turning burn, big attackers, and pingers into instant threats. You build an aggressive Rakdos deck where nearly everything costs an odd amount, then close fast by attacking or burning faces for twice the printed damage. Even as a companion you can run it as commander to guarantee the doubler is always available.

Strengths

  • Damage doubling makes burn spells and combat absurdly efficient — a 3-damage bolt kills, a 6/6 attacker hits for 12
  • Built-in flexibility: works as commander or as a companion bolted onto an odd-cost deck
  • Aggressive Rakdos shell pressures the whole table quickly and punishes greedy players
  • Cheap odd-cost pingers and burn double as removal and reach

Weaknesses

  • The odd-mana-value restriction (as companion) cuts you off from key two- and four-drops like Signets, many rocks, and staple sweepers
  • Doubling only applies to odd-MV sources, so even-cost cards and tokens don't benefit
  • Vulnerable to lifegain, fog effects, and board wipes since it's a fragile attrition/aggro plan
  • Removing Obosh shuts off the doubling and blunts the whole deck

Key Cards

  • Torbran, Thane of Red Fell — Stacks additively with Obosh so each red damage instance gets boosted then doubled, vaporizing boards and players.
  • City on Fire — Triples damage and stacks with Obosh's doubling for game-ending burn and combat multipliers.
  • Walking Ballista — An odd-MV-flexible pinger whose pings become 2-damage each, serving as repeatable removal and a finisher.
  • Fireblast — A free, three-mana-value-valid burn spell that deals 8 to the face with Obosh out.
  • Spear Spewer — Cheap odd-cost pinger that whittles the table down two at a time every upkeep.
  • Terror of the Peaks — An odd-MV dragon that turns every creature you play into doubled direct damage.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize damage multipliers (Torbran, City on Fire, Fiery Emancipation) and efficient odd-cost burn and pingers to maximize Obosh's effect. If running it as commander rather than companion, you gain access to even-cost staples like fast mana and sweepers — lean into that for consistency. Add resilient threats and recursion (Underworld Breach, repeatable burn) plus haste enablers to win before the table stabilizes.

Archetypes

  • Burn / Spellslinger — Obosh doubles every odd-cost burn spell, letting you race the table with direct damage.
  • Aggro / Voltron — Odd-power attackers and Obosh itself hit for double, making combat lethal fast.
  • Pinger Control — Repeatable odd-cost pingers double their damage to control creatures and chip players out.
