BuildCard details

The Commander

Moonfolk offering (You may cast this spell any time you could cast an instant by sacrificing a Moonfolk and paying the difference in mana costs between this and the sacrificed Moonfolk. Mana cost includes color.)

Flying

{1}: Put up to two land cards from your hand onto the battlefield tapped.

Guide

Gameplan

Patron of the Moon is a mono-blue lands engine: cheat lands from hand onto the battlefield for {1} each, then bounce them back with Moonfolk and karoo lands to generate landfall triggers, mana ramp, and tokens. You stall the early game with counters and bounce, snowball an absurd mana advantage off lands cycling in and out of your hand, then close with a giant X-spell or a landfall/Meloku token swarm. The offering ability lets you flash it in for free by sacrificing a spare Moonfolk in a pinch.

Strengths

  • Repeatable land drops fuel landfall payoffs and ramp far past a normal mana curve
  • Flash-casting via Moonfolk offering dodges sorcery-speed removal and surprises blockers
  • Synergizes with bounce lands (karoos), Meloku, and Crucible effects for near-loops of mana and tokens
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and protection in the format

Weaknesses

  • Seven mana with no immediate board impact makes it a slow, fragile commander
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient removal and struggles against resolved enchantments/artifacts
  • The land engine is mana-hungry and grinds to a halt under Stax or land destruction
  • Heavily reliant on the commander sticking; loses tempo badly when it's killed repeatedly

Key Cards

  • Meloku the Clouded Mirror — Turns extra lands into 1/1 flyers, and pairs with Patron to recycle those lands back onto the battlefield for a token/landfall engine.
  • Retreat to Coralhelm — Each land Patron drops untaps a permanent or scrys, enabling untap-a-mana-source loops and card filtering.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Lets you replay lands that hit the graveyard, keeping Patron's land supply flowing for endless drops and landfall.
  • Trade Routes — Returns lands to hand for {1} so Patron can keep slamming them back down, looping landfall and tokens.
  • Lotus Vale — A land that sacrifices three lands for huge mana; bouncing and replaying it with Patron generates explosive mana bursts.
  • Blue Sun's Zenith — A scalable mana sink that converts your land-fueled mana surplus into a lethal mill or a refilling draw.
  • Sakashima of a Thousand Faces — Copies Meloku or Patron and can be offered/recast, doubling your land-cheating and token output.
  • Walking Atlas — Cheap repeatable land-into-play effect that complements Patron and triggers landfall on demand.

Upgrade Path

Lean into karoo bounce lands (Dimir Aqueduct, Halimar Depths) plus Crucible of Worlds and Trade Routes to create reliable land loops, then add tutors like Mystical Tutor and Trophy Mage for your engine pieces. Tighten the counter/protection suite (Swan Song, Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation) so Patron survives, and pick a tight win condition—Meloku tokens or a finisher X-spell—rather than diffusing power across too many value cards. For higher power, add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana rocks) to deploy the seven-drop ahead of curve and pivot the offering ability into a cheaper Moonfolk shell.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Massive X-spells like Blue Sun's Zenith or Stroke of Genius to draw out/deck opponents
  • ▸Meloku token swarm of 1/1 fliers backed by recycled landfall triggers
  • ▸Landfall combat payoffs (e.g., Scute Swarm-style or token-fueled beatdown) going wide
  • ▸Grinding incremental advantage until counterspells and card draw lock the game

Archetypes

  • Lands / Landfall — The {1} ability puts lands onto the battlefield repeatedly, maximizing landfall triggers and land-based value engines.
  • Ramp / Big Mana — Cheating multiple lands per turn ramps into oversized X-spells and game-ending mana sinks.
  • Tokens — Combined with Meloku, the land-bounce-and-replay loop churns out flying token armies.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce protect the engine while you build toward an inevitable mana advantage.
