BuildCard details

The Commander

Ward {1}

Beasts and Birds you control have ward {1}.

Whenever you cast a spell with mana value 5 or greater, choose one —

• Create a 3/3 green Beast creature token.

• Create a 2/2 blue Bird creature token with flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Radagast rewards you for casting big spells by spitting out a 3/3 Beast or 2/2 flying Bird each time you cast something costing 5 or more. You ramp into expensive bombs, accumulate a protected token board (ward 1), and grind the game out with creatures while leaning on Simic value engines. Win by going wide, by recurring huge spells, or by landing a haymaker the tokens defend.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable token generation off spells you already want to cast
  • Built-in ward protection for the commander and your Beast/Bird tokens
  • Pairs naturally with Simic's best ramp into big-mana payoffs
  • Token board plays well with go-wide anthems and sacrifice synergies

Weaknesses

  • Tokens are small and the trigger requires expensive spells, so it can be slow to assemble pressure
  • No card advantage built into the commander itself
  • Board wipes hit your token army hard despite ward
  • Color pair lacks efficient removal and reliable closing power

Key Cards

  • The Great Henge — Cheap with big creatures, it draws cards and ramps while your token board fuels everything.
  • Cyclonic Rift — A mana value 7 spell that triggers Radagast and serves as a one-sided board reset to push for the win.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Triggers Radagast on cast and turns your wide token board into lethal damage.
  • Tooth and Nail — An expensive spell that triggers a token and tutors out two game-ending creatures.
  • Beast Whisperer — Adds card draw on top of your creature-heavy gameplan to keep spells flowing into the trigger.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles every Beast and Bird token Radagast makes, snowballing your board fast.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into fast ramp (Cultivate, Three Visits, mana rocks) so you reliably cast 5+ MV spells early and trigger Radagast every turn. Add token payoffs like Cathars' Crusade, Parallel Lives, and Craterhoof Behemoth alongside card-draw engines (Beast Whisperer, Guardian Project) to avoid running out of gas. For the highest power, include a compact combo such as Mind Over Matter loops or a mana-doubler engine that lets you chain expensive spells into an explosive turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overrun the table with a wide token board plus an anthem or Craterhoof Behemoth
  • ▸Grind incremental advantage and close with a resolved bomb the tokens protect
  • ▸Combo-finish with mana doublers fueling repeated big spells
  • ▸Beat down in the air with a swarm of flying Bird tokens

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Each big spell adds a body, and anthems plus token doublers turn the trickle into a flood.
  • Big Mana Ramp — Radagast wants 5+ MV spells, so ramp into bombs both advances your plan and makes tokens.
  • Spellslinger Value — Casting expensive instants and sorceries triggers tokens while you control the game.
  • Aristocrats — A steady stream of disposable tokens feeds sacrifice outlets and drain effects.
