The Commander

Flash

When Renet enters, return each other nonland permanent that entered this turn to its owner's hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Renet is a mono-blue tempo/control commander you flash in to reset the board state of the current turn—returning everything that just entered (yours or opponents') to hand. You play a flash-heavy, instant-speed game, ambushing opponents who deploy their bombs and recurring Renet to repeatedly undo plays, while leaning on ETB value creatures and card advantage to grind ahead, then close with evasive threats or a combo.

Strengths

  • Flash on a repeatable bounce makes it an instant-speed disruption engine against ETB strategies, tokens, and freshly cast threats
  • Bounces only permanents that entered THIS turn, so with careful sequencing you can blow out opponents' big turns without touching your own established board
  • Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counters, card draw, and protection to keep Renet online
  • Strong synergy with blink/flicker and self-bounce loops for value or soft locks

Weaknesses

  • The effect is symmetrical for the current turn—careless sequencing can blow up your own freshly cast permanents
  • Renet does nothing the turn opponents pass without committing, so it can be a do-nothing 5-drop in slow matchups
  • Mono-blue lacks removal for permanents already on the battlefield from prior turns
  • Five mana for a flash creature is awkward to hold up alongside counters; commander tax punishes repeated recasting

Key Cards

  • Ghostly Flicker — Repeatedly blink Renet to re-trigger its bounce, locking opponents out of anything they deploy that turn.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Soulbond to Renet for a one-mana flicker engine that resets the turn's permanents on demand.
  • Displacer Kitten — Cast a noncreature spell to flicker Renet, turning every cantrip into a board-resetting trigger.
  • Brago, King Eternal — On combat damage, blink Renet to bounce everything that entered, generating a punishing tempo loop.
  • Snapcaster Mage — Flash value that pairs with Renet's flash plan and rebuys your counters and bounce spells.
  • Mystic Sanctuary — Recurs your best instants to keep the disruption flowing in a control shell.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient flicker enablers (Ghostly Flicker, Deadeye Navigator, Displacer Kitten, Brago) and free protection like Force of Negation and Fierce Guardianship to keep Renet resolving. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault) so you can flash Renet and still hold interaction. Finally, pick a dedicated win loop—mana-positive flicker plus a draw outlet—so your disruption converts into an actual kill rather than just a stalemate.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources with repeated bounce loops, then close with evasive blue beaters or fliers
  • ▸Establish a flicker loop (Deadeye/Brago/Kitten) to soft-lock the table and win uncontested
  • ▸Combo finish via mana-positive flicker loops feeding a draw/payoff outlet
  • ▸Counter-and-tempo control until you resolve a single overwhelming threat

Archetypes

  • Flash Tempo Control — Renet's flash plus mono-blue counters lets you hold up reactive answers and ambush opponents' big turns.
  • Blink/Flicker Value — Flickering Renet re-triggers its bounce while you reuse ETB creatures for grindy advantage.
  • Soft Lock/Stax — Looping Renet with a flicker engine can repeatedly bounce everything an opponent tries to cast each turn.
  • Spellslinger Control — Displacer Kitten and cantrips turn cheap spells into recurring Renet triggers.
