The Commander

Flying, haste

Grandeur — Discard another card named Tarox Bladewing: Tarox Bladewing gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is its power.

Guide

Gameplan

Tarox is a mono-red voltron beater: a 4/4 flying haste body for 5 that you suit up with equipment, auras, and power-pumping effects to swing for commander-damage kills. Cast cheap rocks early, drop Tarox, load him with hexproof/protection gear and double strike, then connect twice for lethal. The Grandeur ability is essentially flavor text in singleton, so the deck is really 'big evasive red Voltron.'

Strengths

  • Flying plus haste means immediate, evasive pressure the turn he lands
  • Power-based pump scales hard with equipment and doublers for fast commander-damage kills
  • Mono-red gives consistent mana, cheap removal, and strong ramp rocks
  • Low commander cost (5) leaves room to deploy threats and protection the same turns

Weaknesses

  • Grandeur is dead in singleton without going out of your way to copy or recur a second Tarox
  • Single-creature reliance makes him vulnerable to removal and board wipes
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and recovery compared to other colors
  • No built-in protection, so he gets chump-blocked or exiled easily
  • Color identity locks you out of blue/black interaction and green ramp

Key Cards

  • Embercleave — Cheap to cast off Tarox's attack and grants double strike plus +1/+1, often a one-hit kill.
  • Fireshrieker — Cheap double strike that effectively doubles his evasive commander damage.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect your only real threat from targeted removal.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Indestructible plus free equip turns Tarox into a resilient, fully-loaded threat.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection from two colors and untapping lands lets you swing and re-deploy threats.
  • Ogre Battledriver — A reliable power boost that scales his pump and adds haste for backup attackers.

Upgrade Path

Lean into protection and reach: add Lightning Greaves, Robe of the Archmagi-style hexproof, and a second double-strike source so removal doesn't end your game. Improve evasion-insurance with Rogue's Passage and Whispersilk Cloak, and add mono-red card advantage like Wheel of Misfortune, Outpost Siege, and Faithless Looting to refill. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Fellwar Stone) so you can land Tarox and gear on the same turn.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via flying double strike and power doublers
  • ▸Suiting up Tarox with Embercleave/Sword effects for a one-shot swing
  • ▸Going wide briefly with token/haste support to push lethal
  • ▸Direct burn to finish weakened opponents

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Flying haste plus power-scaling pump make him a natural single-target commander-damage threat.
  • Equipment Aggro — Mono-red equipment matters cards stack evasion, double strike, and protection onto one body.
  • Aggro/Burn — Haste and red's reach let him pressure life totals while burn closes gaps.
