BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever The Rani enters or attacks, create a red Aura enchantment token named Mark of the Rani attached to another target creature. That token has enchant creature and "Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and is goaded."

Whenever a goaded creature deals combat damage to one of your opponents, investigate.

Guide

Gameplan

The Rani turns your opponents' creatures into weapons against each other by goading them with Mark of the Rani auras, then profits by investigating whenever those goaded creatures connect with opponents. You play a political control game, forcing combat between rivals while you accumulate Clue tokens for card advantage, then pivot to win via the Clues, big artifact payoffs, or a wide team of your own. Each attack with The Rani makes another aura, so she snowballs both chaos and resources.

Strengths

  • Repeatable goad on enters and attacks generates relentless political pressure without you committing creatures
  • Investigate triggers convert opponent combat damage into a steady stream of card advantage
  • Grixis gives access to the best removal, control, and Clue/artifact payoffs in the format
  • Forces opponents to fight each other, slowing the table while you build inevitability
  • Mark of the Rani's +2/+2 makes goaded attackers hit harder, accelerating your Clue engine

Weaknesses

  • Goad is unreliable in low-creature or stalled metas where attacks don't connect
  • The Rani has no innate evasion or protection and dies easily to removal
  • Buffing opponents' creatures can backfire if you can't redirect the aggression
  • Three-color manabase with a 4-mana commander can be clunky early
  • Heavily commander-dependent; without her on the field the engine sputters

Key Cards

  • Disrupt Decorum — Mass goad turns the entire board against your opponents and triggers a flood of investigate value.
  • The Locust God — Each Clue you draw into makes an evasive token, converting card advantage into a board and a win.
  • Tireless Tracker — Rewards your steady Clue generation with growth and extra cards, compounding the investigate theme.
  • Marchesa, the Black Rose — Dethrone synergy and recursion thrive in a goad-heavy combat-focused shell.
  • Reconnaissance — Lets you attack with The Rani to make auras and pull back before damage, abusing the attack trigger safely.
  • Academy Manufactor — Triples your token output so each investigate yields Clues, Treasures, and Food for explosive value.

Upgrade Path

Add evasion and protection for The Rani (Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves) so her attack trigger fires consistently, and lean harder into token doublers like Academy Manufactor and Parallel Lives to maximize investigate output. Tighten the manabase with fetches, duals, and fast mana, then add a compact combo finish (Thopter/Sword or Locust God + Skullclamp loops) so your Clue advantage actually closes games rather than just accruing value.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Sacrificing or cracking accumulated Clues to fuel artifact payoffs like The Locust God or Reckless Fireweaver damage
  • ▸Out-grinding the table on card advantage and closing with a control finisher or large evasive threat
  • ▸Letting goaded opponents kill each other, then sweeping the survivor
  • ▸A Grixis combo or burst finish powered by Clue-fueled card draw

Archetypes

  • Group Slug / Goad Politics — Her goad triggers force opponents to attack each other while you tax the table and profit.
  • Artifacts / Clue Tokens — The investigate trigger fuels artifact and Clue-matters payoffs as a card-advantage engine.
  • Control — Grixis removal and counters let you steer the chaos while The Rani grinds value.
  • Combo — Reliable card draw from Clues digs toward Grixis combo finishers and infinite mana lines.
