BuildCard details

The Commander

Mutate {1}{W/U}{R}{R} (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature on top plus all abilities from under it.)

Flying, first strike

Whenever this creature mutates, you may cast target noncreature card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard without paying its mana cost.

Guide

Gameplan

Vadrok wins by mutating repeatedly to recur cheap noncreature spells (mostly artifacts, enchantments, and instants/sorceries with MV 3 or less) for free from your graveyard, generating overwhelming value while building a flying first-striking threat. Each mutate trigger casts a card without paying its cost, so you bounce or sacrifice mutate piles and re-trigger to chain card advantage. You stabilize early with the evasive body and snowball into a value engine or storm-style finish.

Strengths

  • Free spell recursion every mutate creates explosive card and tempo advantage
  • Flying first strike makes Vadrok a respectable commander-damage clock and good blocker
  • Jeskai colors give access to elite removal, counters, and powerful 3-MV-or-less artifacts
  • Mutate piles dodge sorcery-speed wraths and consolidate stats onto one resilient body

Weaknesses

  • Relies on Vadrok being on the battlefield, so commander tax and removal can stall the engine
  • Mutate only works on non-Human creatures, slightly narrowing your creature base
  • Fragile to graveyard hate which shuts off the free-cast trigger
  • Three-color manabase and reliance on small spell suite can be inconsistent without setup

Key Cards

  • Glimpse of Tomorrow — A premier 3-MV sorcery to recur, cascading your battlefield into a fresh board for value.
  • Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald — Cheap recursive mutate fuel that loops with Vadrok-style value, though the real engines are bounce effects.
  • Brokkos, Apex of Forever — Lets you recast mutate creatures from the graveyard, keeping the mutate triggers flowing.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounces a mutate creature to hand so you can re-mutate Vadrok and re-trigger the free cast endlessly.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Premium blue interaction and a one-sided board reset that protects your engine and closes games.

Upgrade Path

Add reliable bounce engines (Cloudstone Curio, Equilibrium, Aura Shards-style loops) to re-trigger mutate repeatedly, and tighten your noncreature suite to high-impact MV-3-or-less cards worth recurring for free. Improve the manabase with fetches, duals, and fast mana like Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus to deploy Vadrok ahead of schedule. Include graveyard insurance and protection (Heroic Intervention, Deflecting Swat) so a single removal spell doesn't collapse the engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via the evasive, first-striking Vadrok pile
  • ▸Recurring a finisher like a board wipe or Approach-style spell for incremental advantage
  • ▸Bounce-and-mutate loops generating overwhelming card and mana advantage to bury opponents
  • ▸Storm-style chains of free spells fueling burn or extra-turn payoffs

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger Value — The mutate trigger reanimates cheap instants and sorceries for free, chaining card advantage.
  • Mutate Tribal — Stacks the mutate keyword creatures to build resilient piles and maximize trigger frequency.
  • Blink/Bounce Combo — Repeatedly returning and re-mutating creatures generates near-infinite trigger value.
  • Tempo Control — Jeskai removal plus an evasive commander lets you control the board while grinding spells back.
