BuildCard details

The Commander

{T}: Until end of turn, target creature has base power 1 or base toughness 1.

Guide

Gameplan

Vhati turns every creature into a fragile target: tap to set a base toughness of 1, then snipe it with any source of damage, deathtouch, or a -1/-1 effect. The deck plays as a slow attrition/control build that grinds opponents' boards down one creature per turn while you assemble value engines, then pivots to a repeatable removal or pinger combo to lock the table out of meaningful creatures and win with incremental beatdown or a finisher.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, color-flexible spot removal stapled to your commander—any pinger or deathtouch source becomes a kill spell
  • Excellent at neutralizing big threats: set base power to 1 to defang an attacker or set toughness to 1 to set up a kill
  • Golgari has the best recursion and ramp, so you can rebuild from board wipes and keep grinding
  • Pairs naturally with deathtouch, wither/infect, and damage-equal-to-power effects for blowouts

Weaknesses

  • Only one activation per turn (no haste/untap setup) makes it slow against go-wide token decks
  • Requires a separate damage/ping source to actually kill things—Vhati alone just shrinks
  • Sorcery-speed by nature (summoning sick the turn it lands) and a removal magnet
  • No card advantage or protection built in; struggles versus heavy interaction and combo decks

Key Cards

  • Walking Ballista — Set a creature's toughness to 1, then remove a counter to ping it dead—repeatable removal and a finisher.
  • Quietus Spike — Equip a deathtouch-like effect; combined with Vhati shrinking toughness, combat math becomes lethal anywhere.
  • Pestilence — Drop everything to 1 toughness and one Pestilence activation sweeps the board while you keep a survivor.
  • Triskelion — Classic Vhati partner—pinging plus toughness reduction removes anything and chains kills.
  • Glissa, the Traitor — Deathtouch first strike plus Vhati lets her trade up endlessly and recur your artifacts.
  • Skullclamp — Set a creature to toughness 1, draw two cards—a key engine to fix Vhati's lack of card advantage.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Cabal Coffers) to deploy Vhati and a payoff faster, and lean into compact combos like Walking Ballista or deathtouch + ping creatures for inevitability. Improve card advantage with Skullclamp, Phyrexian Arena, and Sylvan Library so you don't run out of gas, and include protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) since Vhati draws removal. Finally, tighten removal and recursion (Eternal Witness, Meren, Beast Within) to make the attrition plan inevitable.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Walking Ballista or Triskelion repeatedly pinging the table out, then attacking for the win
  • ▸Infect/deathtouch beatdown enabled by shrinking blockers and defenders
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects as you sacrifice shrunken creatures
  • ▸Grinding the board to nothing and closing with resilient recursive threats

Archetypes

  • Control — Vhati provides recurring threat removal each turn, letting you police the board and protect a value engine.
  • Aristocrats — Setting toughness to 1 plus pingers and sacrifice outlets turns the board into fuel for drain and recursion.
  • Combo — Pairs with Walking Ballista/Triskelion or deathtouch pingers to create repeatable, board-clearing removal loops.
  • Stax/Attrition — Grind opponents out of creatures every turn while Golgari recursion keeps your engine intact.
