The Commander

Menace

Avalanche of Sector 7's power is equal to the number of artifacts your opponents control.

Whenever an opponent activates an ability of an artifact they control, Avalanche of Sector 7 deals 1 damage to that player.

Guide

Gameplan

A mono-red punisher commander that turns opponents' own artifacts against them. Avalanche grows huge in artifact-heavy pods and pings players for activating mana rocks, fetch artifacts, and combo pieces, while you back it up with artifact hate, group-slug effects, and aggressive red beats. You win by attacking with a giant menace creature and bleeding tables out with incidental damage and burn.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable damage whenever opponents tap mana rocks or activate equipment/combo artifacts — common in cEDH and high-power pods
  • Power scales automatically against artifact-heavy decks, often becoming a one- or two-shot threat with menace
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that recasts easily and demands answers
  • Slots naturally into mono-red's deep artifact-hate and group-slug packages
  • Punishes the most-played commander staples (Sol Ring, Signets, fast mana)

Weaknesses

  • Power is entirely dependent on opponents' boards — near-useless against decks with few artifacts
  • Mono-red lacks card advantage, ramp, and recovery compared to other colors
  • No evasion beyond menace and no built-in protection from removal
  • The ping triggers on opponents' terms; passive players can simply not activate artifacts
  • Vulnerable to losing the commander repeatedly with no way to draw into gas

Key Cards

  • Harsh Mentor — Doubles down on the punish-activated-abilities plan, taxing artifact and creature activations across the table.
  • Sulfuric Vortex — Adds relentless incremental damage and shuts off lifegain so your pings and attacks actually close games.
  • Vandalblast — Overloaded, it wipes opponents' artifacts on your terms after you've squeezed value, and acts as a reset valve.
  • Embercleave — Cheap to cast off a wide or pumped board and gives double strike plus trample to turn Avalanche into a one-shot kill.
  • Fervor — Haste lets a freshly cast Avalanche immediately swing for its already-large artifact-count power.
  • Hellkite Tyrant — Steals opponents' artifacts to both shrink their boards and trigger an alternate win, synergizing with the artifact theme.
  • Manabarbs — Group-slug that stacks with Avalanche's pings to grind the whole table down.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into artifact-activation punishers (Harsh Mentor, Lavinia-style taxes via mono-red equivalents) and reliable haste/double-strike enablers (Fervor, Embercleave, Berserkers' Onslaught) so Avalanche kills out of nowhere. Add the best mono-red card advantage and impulse draw (Wheel of Misfortune, Outpost Siege, Underworld Breach) to fight red's gas problem, plus overloaded sweepers like Vandalblast to dictate when artifacts disappear. In higher-power pods, prioritize fast mana and protection (Lightning Greaves, Deflecting Swat) to keep your scaling threat sticky.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting with a massive menace Avalanche, often boosted by Embercleave or double-strike effects for a one-shot
  • ▸Incremental ping and group-slug damage from Avalanche, Sulfuric Vortex, and Manabarbs grinding the table out
  • ▸Stealing and converting artifacts via Hellkite Tyrant for an alternate win

Archetypes

  • Artifact Hate / Stax — Punishes opponents for the artifacts they must run, then blows them up with red's deep destruction suite.
  • Voltron Aggro — A scalable menace body wants equipment and pump to swing for lethal commander damage.
  • Group Slug / Burn — Avalanche's automatic pings pair with Manabarbs, Sulfuric Vortex, and burn to bleed multiple opponents at once.
  • Goad / Forced Aggression — Effects that make opponents tap artifacts or attack maximize incidental ping damage.
