The Commander

When Dong Zhou enters, target creature an opponent controls deals damage equal to its power to that player.

Guide

Gameplan

Dong Zhou is a mono-red Voltron/aggro general whose ETB lets you punish opponents with their own creatures—often killing them on the way out. You play him on turn five, fling damage at a player using their biggest threat, then either suit him up or recur him via blink/sacrifice for repeatable removal-as-burn. The deck closes games by combining direct burn, hasty aggression, and the punishing ETB to grind life totals down fast.

Strengths

  • ETB doubles as removal-adjacent damage and reach, turning opponents' big creatures into liabilities
  • Mono-red consistency with cheap rituals, fast mana, and strong burn payoffs
  • Reusable with blink, bounce, and sacrifice loops for repeated ETB pings
  • Cheap to assemble Voltron with red equipment and trample/haste enablers

Weaknesses

  • Five mana for a body that demands an opposing creature to maximize the ETB
  • Mono-red struggles with card advantage and lacks reliable enchantment/artifact removal beyond destruction
  • Vulnerable to single-target removal interrupting the Voltron plan
  • Whiffs against decks with no creatures or only small creatures in play

Key Cards

  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Protects Dong Zhou, draws cards, and adds repeatable burn to push him as a Voltron threat.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Blinks Dong Zhou each end step to retrigger the punishing ETB every turn.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Sacrifice and recast Dong Zhou for repeatable ETB damage and combo-style value.
  • Fervor — Grants haste so Dong Zhou and your other threats attack the turn they land.
  • Embercleave — A cheap finisher that turns Dong Zhou or a wide board into lethal commander damage.
  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker — Copies Dong Zhou to fire the ETB an extra time each turn for explosive damage.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and red rituals to deploy Dong Zhou and equipment ahead of curve. Lean into blink (Conjurer's Closet) and free sacrifice outlets (Goblin Bombardment, Ashnod's Altar) to weaponize the ETB repeatedly, and include Kiki-Jiki for copy-based bursts. Round out with red's best card advantage (Outpost Siege, Wheel of Fortune) and protection (Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots) to keep your threat sticky.
