The Commander

Double strike

Magecraft — Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell, return target nonlegendary creature card from your graveyard to your hand.

As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may sacrifice any number of creatures. This spell costs {2} less to cast for each creature sacrificed this way.

Each opponent sacrifices a creature of their choice. Create a 3/6 black and red Avatar creature token with haste and "Whenever this token attacks, it deals 3 damage to each opponent."

Guide

Gameplan

You cast Awaken the Blood Avatar early by sacrificing creatures (tokens are ideal) to get a hasty 3/6 that pings every opponent on attack, then flip back to Extus when he dies. Extus turns every instant/sorcery into card advantage by recurring nonlegendary creatures from your graveyard, fueling a value engine of cheap creatures, sacrifice fodder, and burn. You grind opponents down with Avatar swings, magecraft triggers, and recursive aristocrat loops.

Strengths

  • Awaken the Blood Avatar is one of the cheapest ways to land a relevant body, often costing just a few mana after sacrificing tokens
  • Magecraft recursion gives near-endless card advantage by looping cheap nonlegendary creatures every spell
  • Mardu colors offer premier removal, burn, and recursion to grind out long games
  • The Avatar token closes games fast, hitting each opponent for 3 every attack with double-strike support available

Weaknesses

  • Both halves are mana-hungry and Extus' magecraft does nothing the turn he lands without instant/sorcery support
  • Heavily reliant on having a stocked graveyard, so graveyard hate is crippling
  • Sacrificing creatures for the Avatar can be a tempo loss if you lack fodder
  • Three colors strain the mana base and the deck wants both spellslinger and creature density at once

Key Cards

  • Underworld Breach — Lets you recast instants and sorceries from the graveyard, triggering Extus' magecraft repeatedly for explosive recursion.
  • Young Pyromancer — Churns out cheap tokens both to fuel magecraft triggers and to sacrifice for Awaken the Blood Avatar.
  • Dockside Extortionist — A cheap nonlegendary creature you can recur with Extus and resacrifice for ramp and fodder.
  • Reanimate — A cheap spell that both triggers magecraft and cheats back big nonlegendary threats from the yard.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet that converts recurred creatures into reach damage and aristocrat value.
  • Bonus Round — Doubles your instants and sorceries, multiplying magecraft triggers and burn output in a turn.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the mana base with fast mana (Mana Crypt, signets, fetch/dual lands) and add free or low-cost spells like Reanimate, Faithless Looting, and Dark Ritual to chain magecraft triggers. Build toward an Underworld Breach combo package with cheap sacrifice outlets and aristocrat payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) for deterministic kills. Add graveyard protection and selective recursion engines to insulate the deck against hate while maximizing loop potential.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeated Avatar attacks dealing 3 to each opponent, doubled with double strike or extra combat
  • ▸Aristocrat drains via sacrifice outlets like Blood Artist effects looping recurred creatures
  • ▸Underworld Breach combo loops generating infinite damage or storm
  • ▸Burn spells amplified by magecraft and spell-copy effects

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Extus' magecraft rewards a high instant/sorcery count with relentless creature recursion.
  • Aristocrats — The Avatar's sac cost and recurring creatures pair naturally with sacrifice outlets and death payoffs.
  • Reanimator — Cheap reanimation spells trigger magecraft while putting big bodies into play and recurring fodder.
  • Combo — Underworld Breach plus cheap spells and sac loops can generate infinite magecraft triggers and damage.
