The Commander

Equipped creatures you control have haste.

Whenever a nontoken Equipment you control enters, create a token that's a copy of it, except it has "This Equipment's equip abilities cost {2} less to activate." Sacrifice that token at the beginning of the next upkeep.

Guide

Gameplan

Firion is a mono-red Equipment matters commander that doubles every nontoken Equipment that enters by spawning a discounted copy, letting you swing in with hasty, suited-up creatures right away. You curve out cheap equipment, cast more gear to generate value tokens, attach them for a turn of extra power, and beat down before the temporary copies are sacrificed. The deck wins by going wide and tall with hasty equipped attackers and snowballing equipment cast/attach triggers.

Strengths

  • Free temporary value: every nontoken Equipment effectively comes with a second, cheaper copy.
  • Built-in haste means equipped creatures attack the turn they're suited up, enabling explosive starts.
  • Strong synergy with equipment cast/attach payoffs (card draw, tokens, scaling) that double-trigger off the copies.
  • Mono-red gives consistent ramp via rituals and Treasure plus reliable removal and damage.

Weaknesses

  • Highly creature- and equipment-dependent; a board wipe or losing Firion sets you back hard.
  • Token Equipment is sacrificed each upkeep, so the value is fleeting if you can't attach it immediately.
  • Mono-red struggles with persistent enchantment/artifact hate and lacks instant-speed protection.
  • Can be slow if you draw equipment without enough creatures to carry them.

Key Cards

  • Sigarda's Aid — Lets Equipment enter with flash and attach for free the moment it (or its copy) hits the battlefield, maximizing Firion's tokens.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equip with metalcraft plus card draw on every Equipment ETB, including the copies Firion makes.
  • Bruenor Battlehammer — Free equip and a hefty buff turn each equipped creature into a real threat with Firion's haste.
  • Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith — Tutors an Equipment and auto-attaches, feeding Firion's ETB copy machine.
  • Goblin Gaveleer — Trample plus +2/+0 per Equipment lets a single suited-up creature deal lethal commander damage.
  • Maskwood Nexus — Makes all your creatures Rebels/anything and offers token bodies to carry equipment.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Jeska's Will, rituals) and equip-cost reducers (Puresteel Paladin, Bruenor, Brass Squire) so you can attach Firion's copies before they're sacrificed. Prioritize Equipment with strong ETB or attach triggers and cheap equip costs, plus protection like Lightning Greaves and Robe of the Archmagi to keep Firion alive. For a higher ceiling, lean into Living Weapon equipment and tutors (Steelshaper's Gift, Stoneforge Mystic-style effects) to guarantee your best gear every game.
