BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Hei Bai enters or attacks, you may sacrifice another creature or artifact. If you do, put two +1/+1 counters on Hei Bai.

When Hei Bai leaves the battlefield, put its counters on target creature you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Hei Bai is a BW sacrifice-fueled threat that grows itself by eating tokens and expendable artifacts on every ETB and attack, then bequeaths its counters to another creature when it dies. You build a steady stream of sacrifice fodder and aristocrat payoffs, beat down with a snowballing bear, and convert its death into continued board pressure rather than a setback.

Strengths

  • Counters never go to waste—when Hei Bai dies, they transfer to another creature, dodging removal punishment
  • Doubles as both a sacrifice outlet and a payoff, slimming down deck redundancy
  • Attack trigger means recurring free sacrifices each turn for value engines
  • Black and white give the best access to fodder, recursion, and reanimation in the format

Weaknesses

  • Without sac fodder, Hei Bai does nothing extra and is just a 4-mana vanilla bear
  • Relies on connecting in combat or repeated casting to accumulate counters
  • Vulnerable to exile-based removal, which strands the leave-the-battlefield trigger
  • Can be mana-hungry recasting it after board wipes and grinding through commander tax

Key Cards

  • Bitterblossom — Generates a free Faerie token every upkeep as perpetual sacrifice fodder for Hei Bai's triggers.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Turns each sacrificed creature into Treasure, fueling more casts and ramp while you feed Hei Bai.
  • Blood Artist — Drains every opponent each time you sacrifice, converting Hei Bai's engine into incidental life loss.
  • Skullclamp — Equip to a fodder token, sacrifice for Hei Bai, and the clamp turns death into two cards—an absurd card engine.
  • Ashnod's Altar — A free sacrifice outlet plus ramp, letting you funnel artifacts and creatures while generating colorless mana.
  • Minus — placeholder

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and reliable sac outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder) to maximize Hei Bai's triggers, then layer multiple aristocrat payoffs (Bastion of Remembrance, Zulaport Cutthroat) so each sacrifice closes games. Tighten the fodder base with token engines and self-recurring creatures like Reassembling Skeleton and Bloodghast, and include evasion or trample (Rancor, Whispersilk Cloak) to push the counter-stacked beatdown plan.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrat drain from Blood Artist effects looped with sacrifice fodder
  • ▸Commander damage from a heavily counter-pumped, evasive Hei Bai
  • ▸Going wide with tokens and pumping the team via anthem or overrun effects
  • ▸Combo kills like Ashnod's Altar + Pitiless Plunderer feeding a death-payoff drainer

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Hei Bai's repeated sacrifice triggers pair perfectly with death-payoff drainers like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat.
  • Tokens — Cheap token producers supply endless fodder to grow Hei Bai and trigger sacrifice synergies.
  • Counters/Voltron — Snowballing +1/+1 counters that transfer on death make a hard-to-remove evasive beater for commander damage.
  • Reanimator — BW lets you sacrifice big creatures for value and reanimate them, doubling up on ETB and death effects.
