Joven

BuildCard details

The Commander

{R}{R}{R}, {T}: Destroy target noncreature artifact.

Guide

Gameplan

Joven is a mono-red beater that doubles as repeatable artifact removal, tapping for {R}{R}{R} to blow up any noncreature artifact each turn. You'll lean on red's aggression and burn while using Joven to keep mana rocks, equipment, and artifact-based engines off the table. Win by going wide/tall with red creatures and finishing with direct damage or a Voltron threat.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, on-command answer to noncreature artifacts (rocks, lands like Sol Ring, key combo pieces)
  • Mono-red consistency and cheap, efficient threats and burn
  • Strong hate-bear/stax angle against artifact-heavy metas
  • Cheap to build and easy to cast for a 5-drop body

Weaknesses

  • Ability is narrow—useless against artifact creatures, enchantments, and creature-light combo
  • Triple-red activation cost is demanding and slow (needs untap, taps the creature)
  • Mono-red lacks card advantage and ramp outside artifacts it may want to keep
  • No evasion or protection on Joven himself; dies to spot removal easily
  • Caps out at one artifact per turn, too slow against fast decks

Key Cards

  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands after combat so you can both swing and activate Joven, while pushing Voltron damage.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Gives Joven haste and lets you activate his ability without tapping, doubling your artifact destruction.
  • Umezawa's Jitte — Equipment turns Joven into a real threat and grinds out board states in mono-red.
  • Goblin Welder — Adds an artifact-manipulation subtheme alongside Joven's destruction package.
  • Skullclamp — Mono-red's premier card draw engine to offset the color's natural card disadvantage.
  • Fervor — Anthem-style haste lets Joven and your aggressive creatures attack the turn they land.

Upgrade Path

Add untap and haste enablers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Aggravated Assault, Sword of Feast and Famine) so Joven's pricey ability fires more often. Bolster card advantage with Skullclamp, Wheel of Fortune, and impulse draw, and lean into faster red finishers like Torbran or Purphoros. Since the commander is narrow, treat him as a value engine and build a self-sufficient mono-red aggro-stax deck around him rather than relying on the activated ability to win.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aggressive red creatures plus burn spells to the face
  • ▸Voltron Joven or another creature loaded with equipment for commander damage
  • ▸Grinding artifact-dependent tables out of resources, then closing with red beaters

Archetypes

  • Stax/Hatebears — Joven's repeatable artifact destruction punishes mana rocks and artifact engines, anchoring a red disruption shell.
  • Aggro/Burn — Mono-red curves out with cheap threats and finishes with direct damage while Joven removes blockers' tools.
  • Voltron — Equipment and auras turn Joven into a lethal attacker while his ability clears opposing artifact defenses.
