BuildCard details

The Commander

Kiyomaro's power and toughness are each equal to the number of cards in your hand.

As long as you have four or more cards in hand, Kiyomaro has vigilance.

Whenever Kiyomaro deals damage, if you have seven or more cards in hand, you gain 7 life.

Guide

Gameplan

Kiyomaro is a mono-white voltron beater whose stats scale with your hand size, so you flood your grip, keep cards in hand, and swing for a large, vigilant, lifegaining body. The deck plays a controlling game—holding instants, removal, and protection—then ends games by suiting up Kiyomaro and connecting for huge chunks while staying defensive thanks to vigilance and the 7-life trigger.

Strengths

  • Free, scalable threat: a 7/7+ vigilant lifegainer with no equipment needed
  • Vigilance lets you attack and still block, dodging a key voltron weakness
  • Mono-white means consistent mana and access to the best protection and board wipes
  • Holding cards rewards a reactive, interaction-heavy playstyle that punishes opponents

Weaknesses

  • White has historically poor card draw, making a full hand hard to sustain
  • Resets to a tiny creature the moment your hand empties
  • Vulnerable to single-target removal and bounce, costing tempo and re-casts
  • No evasion or trample baked in—chump blockers stop the damage
  • Discard and 'maximum hand size' effects shut the whole plan down

Key Cards

  • Kor Cartographer — Stand-in for ramp/value; more importantly you want effects that refill hand—prioritize white draw engines.
  • Mentor of the Meek — Repeatable card draw in mono-white that helps keep Kiyomaro huge.
  • Bygone Bishop — Investigate clues to bank cards and fuel hand size on demand.
  • Whirler Rogue — Grants unblockable so a massive Kiyomaro connects for the life swing and lethal.
  • Rogue's Passage — Reliable evasion to push your oversized commander through blockers.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect your win condition from removal.
  • Reliquary Tower — Removes the maximum hand size cap so you can hold huge grips safely.
  • Loran's Escape — Cheap protection plus a card draw to keep your hand stocked while saving Kiyomaro.

Upgrade Path

Solve white's card-flow problem with engines like Esper Sentinel, Smothering Tithe, Tome of Legends, and Welcoming Vampire so your hand stays full. Add efficient protection (Flawless Maneuver, Teferi's Protection, Mother of Runes) and reliable evasion or trample so the body actually lands damage. Round out with strong mono-white interaction—Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and a couple board wipes—to keep you alive long enough to deploy a lethal Kiyomaro.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connect with a giant, evasive Kiyomaro for repeated 7+ point hits
  • ▸Pair big hand size with unblockable enablers to deal commander-damage lethal
  • ▸Grind out the table with lifegain and removal while Kiyomaro chips down opponents

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Kiyomaro is a self-contained threat whose size scales with hand, needing only evasion and protection to kill.
  • Control — Holding interaction naturally grows the commander, rewarding a draw-go, reactive build.
  • Lifegain — The 7-life-on-damage trigger pairs with white lifegain payoffs and aristocrat-style drains.
