The Commander

As long as Kosei is enchanted, equipped, and has a counter on it, Kosei has "Whenever Kosei deals combat damage to an opponent, you draw that many cards and Kosei deals that much damage to each other opponent."

Guide

Gameplan

Suit up Kosei with an Aura, an Equipment, and a +1/+1 counter to switch on his ability, then beat down with trample so his combat damage draws you a fistful of cards and burns every other opponent for the same amount. He grows fast with pump effects, and a single connecting swing can deal 20+ to all opponents at once. The deck wins by going wide on buffs early and turning one or two big hits into a board-wide kill.

Strengths

  • Can deal massive damage to all opponents simultaneously, threatening multiplayer kills off a single combat hit
  • Refills your hand explosively, drawing cards equal to combat damage dealt
  • Mono-green gives access to the best ramp and reliable card advantage in the format
  • Cheap commander (3 MV) that's easy to recast and gets online quickly

Weaknesses

  • Requires three separate buffs (Aura, Equipment, counter) to function, making it card-intensive and fragile to removal
  • A single Swords to Plowshares, bounce, or board wipe undoes your whole investment
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, lacking counterspells and efficient targeted removal
  • Needs to connect in combat, so fliers, deathtouch blockers, and fog effects shut it down

Key Cards

  • Rancor — A recurring trample Aura that satisfies the enchant requirement and survives Kosei dying, returning to hand.
  • Shield Counter — Cheap permanent that grants a counter and protects Kosei from a removal spell, hitting two requirements in one.
  • Snake Umbra — An Aura that gives trample-friendly evasion support and totem armor protection while enabling the enchant condition.
  • Hardened Scales — Doubles counters, making it trivial to keep a counter on Kosei and pumping him simultaneously.
  • Berserk — Doubles Kosei's power for the turn, turning a connecting hit into an explosive draw-and-burn that can end the game.
  • Branching Evolution — Multiplies +1/+1 counters placed, ensuring the counter requirement is met while massively boosting damage.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees Kosei connects unblocked so his triggered ability resolves on a guarded target.

Upgrade Path

Add protection like Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil, and Veil of Summer so your buff investment survives removal, and lean into power doublers (Doubling Season, Citanul Hierophants-style ramp) plus haste enablers like Lightning Greaves to attack the turn Kosei is suited up. Prioritize trample and unblockable enablers (Nylea's Colossus, Whispersilk Cloak, Rancor) and one-shot pump (Berserk, Rush of Adrenaline) so a single connection ends the table. Cut clunky high-MV cards for efficient ramp like Three Visits and Igneous Inspiration to cast Kosei on turn 1-2 and out-tempo the pod.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connect with a pumped, trampling Kosei to deal lethal damage to all opponents at once
  • ▸Use Berserk or doublers to spike Kosei's power into one-shot multiplayer kills
  • ▸Grind out card advantage from repeated hits and overwhelm with green threats

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Kosei wants to be loaded with Auras, Equipment, and counters, making single-creature buff strategies his natural home.
  • +1/+1 Counters — He requires a counter to function and counter-doublers both enable and amplify his damage and card draw.
  • Aggro/Stompy — Mono-green ramp lets you deploy Kosei early and swing fast before opponents stabilize.
