The Commander

Guide

Gameplan

Lady Orca is a vanilla 7/7 for 5BR, so she's pure stats with no built-in protection or evasion — the deck must turn her into a real threat. Ramp her out early, equip and enchant her to push commander damage, and back her up with a Rakdos sacrifice/aggro shell so you can win even when she gets removed. Play her as a cheap, repeatable body the Voltron suite can stack on rather than relying on any text box.

Strengths

  • A 7/7 body is large enough to one-shot in three hits and survives most red burn and X/4 sweepers
  • Cheap commander tax relative to her size, and easy to recast for repeated aggression
  • Rakdos gives access to the best removal, burn, and reanimation in the game
  • No abilities to disrupt means opponents gain nothing by targeting her with stax-style hate

Weaknesses

  • Zero evasion, trample, or protection — chump blockers and a single removal spell shut her down
  • Vanilla text box provides no card advantage, so the deck can run out of gas
  • Heavy reliance on equipment/auras invites 2-for-1 blowouts and board wipes
  • No green ramp or white protection; color identity limits recursion and resilience options

Key Cards

  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste let Orca attack the turn she lands and dodge targeted removal.
  • Embercleave — Cheap to cast off Orca's attack and adds double strike plus +1/+1 to threaten lethal commander damage instantly.
  • Fireshrieker — Double strike doubles her 7 power, turning two unblocked hits into a kill.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees an unblockable swing to push 7 (or 14 with double strike) commander damage through.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection from two colors, evasion, and an untap to chain threats while stripping a hand.

Upgrade Path

Lean into Voltron consistency: add more protection (Lightning Greaves, Whispersilk Cloak), evasion (Mask of Memory, Bloodforged Battle-Axe), and recursion so a single removal spell doesn't end your game. Diversify win lines with an aristocrats package (Mahadi, Emporium Master, Mayhem Devil) and reliable card draw (Sign in Blood, Phyrexian Arena) to fight the vanilla body's lack of inherent advantage. Tighten the mana base with rituals and ramp like Sol Ring and Arcane Signet to recast Orca cheaply after wipes.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a suited-up, evasive or double-striking Lady Orca
  • ▸Going wide with aggressive Rakdos creatures and finishing with burn or trample
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist effects
  • ▸Overrun-style alpha strikes after reanimating additional fatties

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Her efficient 7/7 frame is the cheapest reliable canvas in Rakdos for stacking equipment and auras toward commander-damage kills.
  • Aristocrats — Black-red sacrifice and recursion provide a backup win when Orca is answered, draining the table while she pressures life totals.
  • Reanimator — Rakdos reanimation can cheat out other huge bodies alongside Orca to overwhelm blockers.
  • Aggro/Burn — A fast curve of efficient creatures plus burn closes games while Orca soaks removal.
