Purraj of Urborg
BBlackLegendary Creature — Cat Warrior

Purraj of Urborg

Mana value5Rank#27,483
BuildCard details

The Commander

Purraj has first strike as long as it's attacking.

Whenever a player casts a black spell, you may pay {B}. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on Purraj.

Guide

Gameplan

Purraj is a mono-black voltron beater that grows every time anyone casts a black spell as long as you keep paying {B}. You ramp into black-heavy spell density, suit Purraj up with evasion and protection, and crash in for lethal commander damage while leaning on black's tutors and removal to clear blockers.

Strengths

  • Scales fast in black-heavy pods and even off opponents' black spells
  • Mono-black gives unmatched tutoring, removal, and recursion consistency
  • First strike while attacking makes it a strong combat blocker-killer when equipped
  • Cheap counter triggers mean explosive growth for little mana

Weaknesses

  • Single-target voltron is fragile to removal and gets blown out two-for-one
  • Counter growth dries up in non-black pods
  • Needs evasion or it just trades into chump blockers
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment/artifact removal and flyers

Key Cards

  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable and shroud so Purraj connects safely for commander damage.
  • Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud protect your investment and let Purraj swing the turn it lands.
  • Phyrexian Arena — A black-spell engine card-advantage staple that fuels and triggers your counter growth.
  • Cabal Coffers — With Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth it floods you with the black mana to keep paying triggers and cast spells.
  • Sign in Blood — Cheap black spells that draw cards and put a counter on Purraj each time you tax yourself.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the mana with Urborg/Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, and fast rocks so you always have {B} open for triggers and to recast Purraj. Prioritize protection (Whispersilk Cloak, Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention-style effects like Tainted Strike for surprise kills) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find your equipment. Add cheap black spell density and reanimation/recursion (Phyrexian Reclamation) so Purraj's growth and your gameplan survive removal.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via an evasive, counter-pumped Purraj
  • ▸Beating down after clearing the board with black removal
  • ▸Late-game inevitability through card advantage and recursion

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Purraj's counter engine plus equipment turns it into a one-card kill clock with first strike.
  • Mono-Black Midrange — Black's removal and card advantage support a grindy plan around a snowballing commander.
  • Spellslinger — Loading up on cheap black instants/sorceries triggers Purraj repeatedly for free growth.
  • Control — Black removal and hand attack let you stall while Purraj grows into a finisher.
