BuildCard details

The Commander

Raphael must be blocked if able.

Enrage — Whenever Raphael is dealt damage, add that much {R}. Until end of turn, you don't lose this mana as steps and phases end.

Guide

Gameplan

Raphael turns combat into a red mana engine: it must be blocked, soaks up damage, and converts every point taken into red mana that survives phase changes. You attack (or ping Raphael yourself), bank a pile of {R}, and dump it into giant X-spells or burn to close the game. The deck plays like a ramp-into-payoff aggro shell wrapped in mono-red.

Strengths

  • Generates explosive bursts of mana that don't empty as the turn progresses, fueling huge X-spells
  • 'Must be blocked' lets you trade Raphael's beats for either chip damage or a fat mana payday
  • Cheap 4-mana red commander that's easy to recast and pressures the board immediately
  • Mono-color consistency makes mana base and tutoring straightforward

Weaknesses

  • Mana generation only triggers if Raphael actually takes damage, so opponents can simply not attack or chump-block elsewhere
  • Dies to instant-speed removal before damage resolves, leaving you with nothing
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and recursion outside artifacts, leading to topdeck dependence
  • Indestructible/protection effects on Raphael are needed to safely take large damage hits

Key Cards

  • Darksteel Plate — Makes Raphael indestructible so he can absorb massive combat or burn damage and survive to spend the mana.
  • Walking Ballista — Lets you ping Raphael on your own terms to manufacture red mana at instant speed without relying on combat.
  • Fireball — The classic mana sink that converts a turn's worth of Enrage mana directly into damage or a finisher.
  • Comet Storm — Multitarget X-burn that turns your hoarded red into simultaneous lethal hits across the table.
  • Vigor — Prevents damage to Raphael and replaces it with counters—useful if you want him huge, though it shuts off Enrage, so know your line.
  • Goblin Sharpshooter — A repeatable free pinger to feed Raphael damage and reload your mana pool each turn.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will) and rituals to enable explosive payoff turns even without Enrage. Lean into indestructibility (Darksteel Plate, Boros Charm) plus instant-speed self-pingers (Walking Ballista, Pinball Wizard) so you control exactly when Raphael takes damage. Round out with red card advantage like Wheel of Fortune and Outpost Siege to fight mono-red's biggest weakness—running out of gas.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Suit up Raphael with indestructibility and equipment to deal repeated commander damage
  • ▸Cast an oversized Walking Ballista or Comet Storm to wipe and finish multiple opponents at once

Archetypes

  • Big Mana / X-Spells — Enrage banks red mana that survives phase changes, perfect for one-shot Fireball/Banefire/Comet Storm payoffs.
  • Aggro / Voltron — 'Must be blocked if able' guarantees a target lets through your other attackers or forces unfavorable trades.
  • Spellslinger Burn — The mana engine lets you cast oversized burn spells to ping the whole table down.
