The Commander

{2}{R}, {T}, Sacrifice an artifact: Create a token that's a copy of another target creature you control, except it isn't legendary. It gains haste. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step.

Guide

Gameplan

Use Tempestra to repeatedly copy your best creature each turn, getting an extra ETB and a hasty attacker that vanishes at end of turn before downside matters. You fuel the ability with cheap, recurring artifacts—Treasures, Clues, and creature-tokens that double as artifacts—then snowball value with high-impact ETB and attack triggers. Win by overwhelming the table with copied bombs, repeated burn/damage triggers, or a token army.

Strengths

  • Generates an extra creature and ETB every single turn for only {2}{R} plus an artifact
  • Temporary token sidesteps legend rule and death drawbacks—great for copying powerful ETB bombs
  • Cheap two-mana commander that comes back fast and offers value even without a big board
  • Synergizes beautifully with Treasure/artifact generation that mono-red does well

Weaknesses

  • Needs constant artifact fuel or the ability stalls out
  • Requires another good creature on board to copy—dead in topdeck/empty-board states
  • Mono-red lacks card advantage, tutors, and interaction outside burn
  • Tapping to activate makes Tempestra a slow, telegraphed engine vulnerable to removal
  • Copies disappear at end step, so it provides little persistent defense

Key Cards

  • Dockside Extortionist — Copying it generates a flood of Treasures every turn, which also become fuel for Tempestra.
  • Combat Celebrant — A hasty copy triggers an extra combat phase each turn, exiling itself harmlessly when the token is sacrificed.
  • Inferno Titan — A massive ETB/attack damage trigger that you can replay every turn via copies.
  • Ancient Copper Dragon — Hasty copy attacks for huge Treasure payoffs while dodging the legend rule.
  • Treasure Map — Reliable, recurring artifact fuel that also smooths draws in card-starved mono-red.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Doubles your Treasure value, turbocharging both ramp and Tempestra activations.
  • Terror of the Peaks — Each copied creature entering deals damage, turning Tempestra into a repeatable Shock engine.
  • Ramos, Dragon Engine — Cheap artifact tokens like Treasures fuel activations while big payoffs get copied for value.

Upgrade Path

Lean into reliable artifact fuel—Dockside Extortionist, Goldspan Dragon, Treasure Map, and Smothering Tithe-style ramp—so you never miss an activation. Add the highest-impact ETB and attack-trigger creatures worth copying (Terror of the Peaks, Inferno Titan, Combat Celebrant) and protect Tempestra with haste enablers and recursion. Round out mono-red's weaknesses with card-draw artifacts (The Great Henge, Wheel of Misfortune) and a few stax pieces to slow faster combo decks.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Copying extra-combat enablers like Combat Celebrant with big attackers for lethal swings
  • ▸Repeated ETB damage from Terror of the Peaks or Inferno Titan to burn out the table
  • ▸Treasure-fueled snowball into oversized hasty copies that overwhelm the board
  • ▸Go-wide token aggro backed by an extra threat every turn

Archetypes

  • Value/ETB Blink — Tempestra reuses powerful enter-the-battlefield triggers every turn by making temporary copies.
  • Treasure/Artifacts — Treasure tokens are the perfect renewable sacrifice fuel for her ability.
  • Tokens/Aggro — A hasty extra body each turn supports a go-wide red beatdown plan.
  • Combo — Copying creatures with combat or trigger loops (Combat Celebrant, Terror of the Peaks) can close games explosively.
