BuildCard details

The Commander

{1}{B}{B}: Veldrane gets -3/-0 and gains forestwalk until end of turn. (It can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a Forest.)

Guide

Gameplan

Veldrane is a vanilla-ish mono-black beater whose only trick is paying {1}{B}{B} for forestwalk—useful in maybe one matchup. In practice you ignore the commander's text and build a generically powerful mono-black deck around it: ramp into threats, grind with removal and card draw, then close with big evasive creatures or a combo. Treat Veldrane as a sturdy body and a color-identity anchor rather than a value engine.

Strengths

  • Mono-black gives access to the format's best tutors, removal, and reanimation
  • Cheap to lead a budget deck since the commander itself does little
  • Black has elite card advantage (Phyrexian Arena, Necropotency) to refuel grindy games
  • Repeatable forestwalk can occasionally sneak through green-heavy pods

Weaknesses

  • Commander ability is nearly useless and provides no engine or protection
  • No evasion, ramp, or card advantage built into the card itself
  • Mono-color means no answers to enchantments and limited artifact removal
  • Veldrane self-shrinks (-3/-0) to gain evasion, gutting its combat damage
  • Low ceiling compared to almost any other mono-black legend

Key Cards

  • Cabal Coffers — With Urborg it powers explosive mono-black ramp to overload the rest of your spells.
  • Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth — Turns all lands into Swamps, enabling Coffers and fixing your black-heavy curve.
  • Phyrexian Arena — Reliable, repeatable card advantage to keep a grindy mono-black deck stocked.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Converts your life total into a torrent of spells and a potential one-shot win.
  • Sign in Blood — Cheap mono-black card draw that keeps your gas flowing in slower games.
  • Toxic Deluge — Premier scalable board wipe to reset aggressive boards while you grind ahead.

Upgrade Path

Lean entirely into mono-black's strengths and stop expecting value from the commander: add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion), top-tier tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor), and a compact combo such as Mikaeus + a sac outlet or Bolas's Citadel finishers. Tighten the ramp package with Cabal Coffers/Urborg/Nykthos and add interaction like Toxic Deluge and Imp's Mischief; honestly, swapping to a stronger mono-black commander (e.g., K'rrik or Sheoldred) is the biggest power jump if the table allows.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Drain the table with Exsanguinate, Torment of Hailfire, or Gray Merchant of Asphodel
  • ▸Reanimate and beat down with oversized black threats
  • ▸Aristocrats loops feeding Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Bolas's Citadel plus a life-payment outlet to dump your library

Archetypes

  • Midrange Control — Black's removal and card draw let Veldrane decks grind opponents out one threat at a time.
  • Reanimator — Mono-black tutors and Reanimate-style spells cheat out bombs the commander can't provide.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist turn black's expendable creatures into incremental wins.
  • Big Mana Combo — Coffers/Urborg ramp fuels combos such as Bolas's Citadel or Exsanguinate finishers.
