Growth Spiral

{G}{U}

Instant

LegalCard DrawRank #225

Draw a card. You may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield.

Why is this card good?

Growth Spiral is one of the cleanest two-mana ramp spells in Simic colors, and the flexibility is what makes it a staple. You replace the card immediately (no card disadvantage) and potentially jump a turn ahead on lands — all at instant speed. That instant-speed clause is the key selling point. You can hold up interaction or counterspells on an opponent's turn, then crack Growth Spiral at their end step when you've gotten no use out of those mana otherwise. Worst case, it's a cantrip; best case, it's a land drop and a card. Any Simic-or-bigger deck wants this: Bant, Sultai, Temur, four/five-color goodstuff, and especially landfall or big-mana ramp decks (Tatyova, Aesi, Omnath). It pairs beautifully with extra-land-drop effects. When to skip it: if your deck has few lands in hand reliably (low land count, heavy spell decks), or you're a non-green/blue identity. It also whiffs into late-game topdecks — but that's true of most ramp.

    Growth Spiral's effect doesn't count as playing a land. It can put a land card onto the battlefield even if it's not your turn or if you've already played your land for the turn.
