{1}{W}: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to another target creature this turn by sources of the color of your choice.

{5}{W}{W}: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to target player or planeswalker this turn by sources of the color of your choice.

Guide

Gameplan

Avacyn anchors a mono-white defensive control/voltron build that grinds opponents out with protection, taxes, and incremental value while you slowly close with a beater or wide board. Early turns deploy ramp rocks and stax pieces; mid-game you protect key creatures (or yourself) with Avacyn's damage prevention and assemble a board that out-values the table. You win late through evasive damage, an anthem-pumped army, or by locking the game into a state only you can break.

Strengths

  • Repeatable damage prevention shields your best creatures from combat and burn while you stabilize
  • Flying and vigilance make Avacyn a respectable evasive blocker and attacker on her own
  • Mono-white gives access to the best stax, taxes, and protection effects in the format
  • Cheap activation cost lets you fog single threats every turn very efficiently

Weaknesses

  • Damage prevention does nothing against destroy, exile, sacrifice, -X/-X, or counters
  • Mono-white struggles with raw card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
  • The player-protection ability costs seven mana and is rarely realistic
  • No inherent way to close games quickly—can stall into slow, grindy boards

Key Cards

  • Smothering Tithe — Premier mono-white ramp and card advantage engine to overcome the color's resource weaknesses.
  • Land Tax — Fixes draws and fuels a Scroll Rack engine to fight white's card-disadvantage problem.
  • Archetype of Courage — Gives your team first strike so Avacyn's prevention turns combat into one-sided removal.
  • Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite — Anthem plus -2/-2 sweeps opposing boards while pumping yours into a real win condition.
  • Approach of the Second Sun — A reliable mono-white alternate win for a deck that otherwise lacks fast closers.

Upgrade Path

Lean into white's best ramp (Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, mana rocks) and card draw (Mentor of the Meek, Welcoming Vampire) to patch the color's resource gaps. Add first-strike granters like Archetype of Courage and True Conviction to convert Avacyn's prevention into pseudo-removal, and include decisive finishers such as Approach of the Second Sun, Elesh Norn, or a strong equipment package. Tighten interaction with Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and stax taxes to control the pace toward your win.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Anthem-pumped go-wide or flying army connecting for lethal
  • ▸Voltron commander damage with equipment and protection
  • ▸Approach of the Second Sun for a deterministic alternate win
  • ▸Grinding the table out under stax while a lone evasive threat chips away

Archetypes

  • Control — Avacyn's repeatable prevention plus white stax and removal lets you neutralize threats and grind the game out.
  • Stax — Mono-white offers Thalia, Drannith Magistrate, and tax pieces while Avacyn keeps your key creatures alive under pressure.
  • Voltron — Prevent all combat damage to your equipped beater, making attacks and blocks one-sided while you swing for lethal.
  • Tokens — Go wide with white token makers and anthems, using Avacyn to protect your engine creatures from sweepers and combat.
