The Commander

Menace

Whenever Casey Jones attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on target attacking creature.

Whenever you put one or more +1/+1 counters on a creature you control, Casey Jones deals that much damage to target opponent.

Guide

Gameplan

Casey Jones turns a counters subtheme into a burn engine: every time you place +1/+1 counters on your creatures, Casey rifles that much damage straight at an opponent's face, ignoring blockers. You curve out cheap aggressive creatures, attack to grow your board, and stack counter-placement, proliferate, and extra-combat effects so each turn deals a burst of unblockable damage on top of menace beatdown.

Strengths

  • Built-in reach—damage from the third ability bypasses blockers, fogs, and lifegain races
  • Menace makes Casey hard to block and reliably triggers his attack-counter ability
  • Scales explosively with counter doublers, proliferate, and extra combat steps
  • Pressures multiple opponents at once since you choose the damage target each trigger
  • Aggressive mono-red game plan is cheap, fast, and resilient to going wide

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red struggles with sustained card advantage and lacks targeted artifact/enchantment hate variety
  • Heavily commander-dependent—remove Casey and the burn engine stalls
  • Vulnerable to board wipes given the go-wide, counter-investment plan
  • Few in-color +1/+1 counter doublers, so you lean on colorless support
  • Flying or evasive defensive boards can race you if your damage triggers dry up

Key Cards

  • Aggravated Assault — Extra combat steps mean extra Casey attack triggers and more counters converting into direct damage.
  • Moraug, Fury of Akoum — Generates a combat per land drop, multiplying attack triggers and counter-based burn each turn.
  • The Ozolith, the Shattered Spire — Adds an extra counter to every placement and can double them, directly inflating Casey's damage output.
  • Sword of Truth and Justice — Puts a counter and proliferates on combat damage, each instance pinging an opponent via Casey.
  • Karn's Bastion — A colorless proliferate land that quietly converts your existing counters into bursts of face damage.
  • Contagion Engine — Proliferates twice and is repeatable, turning a wide counter board into a massive damage spike.
  • Hellkite Charger — Repeatable extra combats with haste keep chaining attack triggers and counter damage.
  • Embercleave — Cheap to cast after a wide attack, granting double strike and trample to close games through any wall.

Upgrade Path

Lean into multipliers: add colorless counter doublers and proliferate (Contagion Clasp, The Ozolith) plus more extra-combat enablers (Combat Celebrant, World at War, Savage Beating) to make each trigger lethal. Smooth the curve with fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, ritual effects) and add ways to protect or recast Casey, since the engine collapses without him. Round out mono-red's weaknesses with impulse card advantage (Outpost Siege, Wheel of Misfortune) and a couple of resilient haste enablers.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeatedly triggering the third ability to burn opponents out with stacked counter placements
  • ▸Extra-combat loops turning each attack into multiple counter-damage bursts
  • ▸Menace beatdown with a buffed Casey and friends, often finished by Embercleave
  • ▸Proliferate spikes that dump huge counter totals into a single opponent's face

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters Aggro — Every counter you place becomes both a bigger body and a Lightning Bolt to the face via Casey's third ability.
  • Burn / Direct Damage — The deck weaponizes counter placement into repeatable, blocker-proof reach at opponents' life totals.
  • Extra Combat Aggro — Each additional combat re-triggers Casey's attack ability, stacking counters and damage exponentially.
