Gameplan

Drana is a mono-black aggro/Voltron creature that pumps herself by weakening blockers, letting her swing for huge evasive damage while clearing the board of small creatures. You ramp into her early, protect her, and use the activated ability to push lethal flying damage or wipe out token boards and X/1s. Black's tutors and recursion keep her on the table while you grind opponents down.

Strengths

  • Built-in evasion (flying) makes her a reliable Voltron threat
  • Repeatable activated ability doubles as removal and a finisher
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion
  • Ability scales infinitely with mana, enabling one-shot kills

Weaknesses

  • Costs a lot of mana per activation, so she's mana-hungry
  • Vulnerable to single-target removal and board wipes
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment/artifact removal
  • Only one combat per turn limits her without extra attack steps
  • -0/-X doesn't kill creatures unless toughness is fully reduced, and lifegain races can outpace her

Key Cards

  • Cabal Coffers — With enough Swamps it generates the explosive mana her X ability craves.
  • Nirkana Revenant — Doubles black mana and pumps itself, fueling massive Drana activations.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable and shroud so her commander damage connects safely.
  • Rogue's Passage — Pushes Drana through for unblockable commander-damage kills.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands after combat so you can attack and still activate her ability.
  • Crypt Ghast — Doubles Swamp mana to power repeated big activations.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize mana doublers (Cabal Coffers, Nirkana Revenant, Crypt Ghast, Caged Sun) and untap/extra-combat effects to maximize her X ability. Add protection like Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and Whispersilk Cloak, plus tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find them. Round out with mono-black staples like Bolas's Citadel and reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead) to recover from removal.
