BuildCard details

The Commander

Deathtouch

At the beginning of your upkeep, exile two cards from your graveyard. If you can't, sacrifice Egon and draw a card.

At the beginning of your upkeep, mill a card.

{2}{B}, {T}, Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Egon is a cheap, self-mill mono-black engine that grinds opponents out with card advantage. You mill yourself aggressively, fuel a graveyard, and turn that yard into cards via the Throne side while keeping Egon alive by always having two cards to exile each upkeep. You win through value, reanimation, and grindy attrition rather than fast combos.

Strengths

  • Three-mana deathtouch commander that blocks and trades up well in combat
  • Built-in card advantage engine via both upkeep filtering and the Throne's draw ability
  • Self-mill synergizes with reanimation, delirium, and graveyard payoffs
  • Cheap to cast and recast, hard to keep down in mono-black
  • Front side is a beater while the back keeps generating value if Egon dies

Weaknesses

  • Needs a steady graveyard supply or Egon sacrifices himself each upkeep
  • Heavily reliant on the graveyard—vulnerable to Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog, and exile effects
  • Mono-black means no access to blue interaction or green ramp/recursion
  • Engine is grindy and slow; can lose to fast combo or wide aggro before it stabilizes
  • Color-screwed against problematic noncreature permanents (enchantments) it can't easily answer

Key Cards

  • Stitcher's Supplier — Cheap repeatable self-mill that fills your yard to feed Egon's upkeep exile cost.
  • Altar of Dementia — Sacrifice outlet and mill engine that keeps the graveyard stocked and enables combos.
  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation to cash in big creatures milled into the yard for value or wins.
  • Gravecrawler — Recursive body that fuels sacrifice loops and keeps fodder available cheaply.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Turns your milling and life total into explosive card advantage and combo potential.
  • Syr Konrad, the Grim — Converts all your milling and creature deaths into repeatable direct damage to close games.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble engines faster, plus reanimation density to turn milled bombs into threats. Lean into a compact combo kill—Mikaeus/Triskelion or Bolas's Citadel lines—so you aren't purely grinding. Round out interaction with cheap removal and graveyard hate of your own to protect the engine.

Archetypes

  • Self-Mill Value — Egon's upkeep mill plus the Throne's draw ability turns your library into a resource engine.
  • Reanimator — Filling the graveyard sets up cheap reanimation of bombs you mill or discard.
  • Aristocrats — Mono-black sacrifice payoffs and recursive creatures pair naturally with the graveyard theme.
  • Combo — Mill engines plus Syr Konrad or Bolas's Citadel enable loop-based kills.
