BuildCard details

The Commander

As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may exile any number of creature cards from your graveyard. This spell costs {2} less to cast for each card exiled this way.

Deathtouch

Whenever Gorex attacks or dies, choose a card at random exiled with Gorex and put that card into its owner's hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Fill your graveyard fast, then deploy Gorex cheaply by exiling creature cards as a cost discount, recurring them whenever Gorex attacks or dies. You grind value off recursion and aristocrats-style sacrifice loops while building toward a recursive engine that out-values the table. Death and reattack triggers refill your hand, making Gorex a self-sustaining threat that's hard to keep down.

Strengths

  • Massive cost reduction lets you cast an 8-mana commander for as little as black, and exiled creatures aren't lost forever
  • Built-in card advantage on attack and death rewards aggressive, sacrifice-heavy play
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion in the format
  • Deathtouch makes Gorex a reliable attacker and blocker that punishes blocks

Weaknesses

  • Random selection from exile means you can't reliably retrieve a specific key card
  • Heavy reliance on the graveyard makes it vulnerable to exile-based graveyard hate
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment and artifact removal and lacks built-in protection
  • Casting Gorex requires a stocked yard first, so early turns can be setup-only

Key Cards

  • Buried Alive — Loads three creatures straight into the graveyard to fuel Gorex's discount and recursion engine.
  • Gravecrawler — A free sacrifice fodder creature that returns from the yard endlessly for aristocrats loops.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Sacrifices creatures for mana and combos with recursion to grind out drains and triggers.
  • Viscera Seer — A free sacrifice outlet that lets you loop death triggers and reload Gorex's exile pile.
  • Gray Merchant of Asphodel — Recurring it via Gorex drains the table for huge chunks in a mono-black devotion shell.
  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation gets bombs from the yard while you fill exile for Gorex value.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana like Dark Ritual, Crypt Ghast, and Cabal Coffers to power out big drains and recur key creatures. Tighten the combo package with Blood Artist effects, free sacrifice outlets, and Phyrexian Altar to enable repeatable death loops, and include tutors like Demonic Tutor and Diabolic Intent to find them. Protect your engine with graveyard recursion redundancy and a few pieces of interaction like Toxic Deluge and Bojuka Bog to slow opposing graveyards.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeated Gray Merchant of Asphodel drains in a high-devotion mono-black build
  • ▸Aristocrats loops with Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat draining the table
  • ▸Reanimating large threats and beating down with deathtouch attackers
  • ▸Combo loops using free sacrifice outlets and recursion for infinite drain

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets plus death triggers and Gorex's own death trigger create grinding value loops.
  • Reanimator — A full graveyard pulls double duty as fuel for Gorex and targets for reanimation spells.
  • Self-Mill / Graveyard Value — Filling the yard powers Gorex's discount and recursion, turning the graveyard into a resource engine.
  • Combo — Sacrifice outlets, recursion, and Phyrexian Altar enable death-loop combos for repeatable triggers.
